First time shooting the new gun!
 

Well, I finally took my new rifle out for a test drive. After I got it dialed in, I shot a 1" group at 100 yards. But at that point, I was running out of time and the shoulder was feeling the effects so I called it a day. I was pretty darn happy considering I' m just getting used to the gun and it was the first time firing it. (Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag)

It should only improve. How many rounds did you fire? It takes about 100-200 rounds to smooth out any tooling marks left in the bore. Once that' s done, and it is cleaned of all the copper fouling (which should be done while you are shooting it) it may shoot much better than 1" . Also, take the time now to check all the screws and make sure they are tight still. It sometimes takes 50-100 rounds for them to seat in properly so you don' t have to constantly check them.

Thanks! I only put 25 rounds through it so we have a long time to go before it settles in. Will check screws etc. This is just the start!

How is your trigger pull? Mine was a bit on the heavy side but after I worked it down the group size shrank.

GB Glad your new Ruger is shooting well.It will take a little time for the barrel to smooth up and your groups should improve.That 7 mm will get to your shoulder quickly. Ruger' s recoil pads aren' t the best I' ve ever seen.Lighten your trigger pull and it will help your groups.

Well, I don' t have anything to really compare it to, but it does feel like it takes a bit to squeeze off a shot.

What is involved with having a trigger lightened?

And, what would be considered a " good" grouping at 100 yards?

To have your trigger lightened you have two options. One involves having a gunsmith stone it to remove some of the metal on the trigger and sear. The other option is to replace the trigger with an aftermarket unit. Personally I prefer to stone mine. A true 1" group at 100 yards is really pretty good for an out of the box sporting rifle.
