deer: 270 vs 7mm-08 vs 308

Charlie Brown is right. For normal deer hunting purposes, there' s not enough difference between these rounds to make onee a better choice than the other![&:]

Usually these types of posts turn into a " don' t get those. get a....300 mag or a 7mm mag" post I' m glad to see this one didn' t.
I don' t own a .308 so I cannot comment on it, but the .270' s and the 7mm 08 I have are both great shooters and don' t carry a heavy recoil. I haven' t used the 7mm 08 in a deer hunting situation yet, but am very impressed with the accuracy. My 270' s have both been used on whitetails and they don' t go very far after being hit by one of them. Not far at all.

.270, 7mm-08, .308, 30-06, 25-06, .280, and you could throw in several more. Not enough practical difference to worry about. I normally pick whatever shoots accurate first with less consideration placed on the actual caliber (within reason!) This year I' ll be deer hunting with a .308 Tikka because I' ve found it to be a tackdriver. I really could have cared less what caliber it was as long as it was in a cartridge suitable for whitetail. I' ve killed deer with a wide range of calibers and never noticed a big difference in any of them. You can have a deer drop over instantly with a brain shot from a varmint cartridge or have one get away with a poor shot from a .50 BMG!

diyj98 hit the nail on the head. I have dropped deer inn thier tracks with a 22 hornet and seen them run off after being hit with a 30-06 shot placement is everything and the only thing really.

I think everybody already knows the jazz about shot placement and all on this page. But how can one pick out a caliber based on accuracy when its at the gun shop? They tend to fown on picking up the gun and firing a few rounds in the store. You just can' t look at a gun from a distance, and say " that one is accurate" . I think his question is if buying a new one what would be best suited for a particular kinda of hunting. As most said already, all three would do the job in spades.

bigcountry, the point of my post wasn' t " buy the most accurate rifle" the point was between the three or several other similiar round any practical difference is irrelavant. I also wouldn' t take if for granted that " I think everybody already knows the jazz about shot placement and all on this page" . If everyone was an expert from reading their gunrags, there would be very little need of this forum.
