Best caliber for lever action Whitetail rifle?
#22
I would agree on the Mdl 99s they are fast sweet handling guns.I used a 243 on white-tail one time and I was hooked.I passed up a 7-08 in the feath-weight on the used gun rack last year, and I regret it now.I didn' t have $550 to spare.

clattin ,the 35 rem in a marlin would be a great choice. Two of the guys i hunt with use this gun and cartridge for deer here in Pa. I use the marlin lever guns in 357 magnum and 444. I also use the savage 99 in 250-3000 and 284 win.My favorite is the 250- 3000.

The 35rem is such a classic whitetail round and the Marlin is a classic looking hunting tool. I wanted one in the worst way... but then a buddy gave me (yes, I said GAVE) me a Savage 99 in .308 so that is my new " classic" whitetail round and tool. :-)

In all fairness, 8mm, somebody gave it to him. He was helping a guy move who had had a bad hunting experience (wounded the deer, I think), put the gun in his closet and never used it again. My buddy discovered it and the guy said, " It' s yours." My buddy never used it and knew I was looking for a lever action (I' m a lefty) and he said the same thing. Shot my first whitetail with it last year on the Tug Hill in NY. I don' t think the .308 (and the scope) were ever more underutilized (the deer ran down a ravine and stopped about 15 yards in front of me. :-)
