Weatherby: If you had to?

Let's assume you have all your bases covered, from .22LR to .458 Lott, a gun for every hunt/animal across the world.

You can have any weatherby rifle/caliber, which cartridge do you choose?

If other, say which cartridge.

From what I gather by ammo sales, the most popular weatherby's are currently
1. 30-378
2. 300 wby
3. 257 wby
4. 270 wby
5. 7mm wby
6. .340 wby

I only ever shot the .257 Weatherby one time. I sighted it in for my cousin who mounted a scope on it and didn't have time to go out before the season. That rifle was so fun to shoot, I couldn't put it down until all the ammo was gone.

270 Weatherby

I said .257 because I would use it more often (predators/deer).

340 weatherby, more powerful brother of the 338 win, and even though a little pricey, you will find ammo down the road for it, where as the 338RUM is getting scarce.

Weatherby vanguard sub MOA chambered in .243 Win.

If I had to have a MK IV I'd rather donate the money to RMEF.

Alsatian 07-13-2011 11:11 AM

I would get a .340 Weatherby.

Blackelk 07-13-2011 11:26 AM

I'd take the 378 Wby.

GRIZZLYMAN 07-13-2011 01:46 PM

257 WBY. I already have a 300 WBY.

257 whats not to like besides the price?
Dont waist your time telling me about double shoulder radius and freebore!

I've always liked the Mark V Deluxe, The bluing is amazing. But i wouldn't get it in a weartherby cart. I not going to spend that much more to reload a round because it has weatherby stamped on it.

weatherby rifles

if i had my choice of the weatherby calibers it would be the 300 Wby mag. the only thing it would not be a weatherby rifle. i would take a remington 700 in 300 win mag and have it rechambered for the 300 wby mag. im not real fond of wby rifles.

I'm an "extreme sentimentalist" so you won't hear me badmouthing Weatherby, his ideas, his guns or yes... even the hooplah and salesmanship he "created" on his way to becoming a household name in the gun world. :party0005: IMHO the 300Wby is THE ORIGINAL "super 30".

Sure you can do anything a 300Wby will do with a 300Win, and with a good Barnes X-bullet I can kill most anything with the 25/06 that the 257Wby does. BUT I didn't say it would be as much fun! :p (I had a 25/06 Wby Vanguard many years ago and LOVED it until someone borrowed it from my truck without asking! :sad0064: )

I have a 300Wby MKV Dlx and LOVE it. Has some GORGEOUS wood on it. Was my late step-fathers elk rifle and was only used maybe 2-3 times in CO. He never really liked it because he said it kicked so hard but back then that was "the big bad 30cal" to be had over the counter. IMHO the Mark V Deluxe is the Marilyn Monroe of rifles, especially mine, 1983 vintage with a 26" Number 1 contour (never previously heard of 30cals in #1 contour but that's what authentication paperwork from Wby says!) That gorgeous, dark grained, rich rosewood, bright spacers and "chrome blued" pencil thin barrel topped with a shiny black Leupold just SCREAMS twisted steel and sex appeal. :p (As much as I love the MK V ultra-lightweights I consider any Wby that has a synthetic stock akin to a beautiful, nude woman with no make-up, flat shoes and a black trench coat! )

All that diatribe being stated, I must go on record as admitting that my next Wby will be a custom shop Wby Mk V Euromark in 257Wby. The older I get the more I appreciate beautiful wood and fine metal work and abhor stainless and plastic.

Now back to the original question, 257 vs 300??? Why, I dare say BOTH of course!!! ;)

the 257 weatherby is maybe the best seller they have
but my 25-06 ackley will do within 60 fps of it with 10 grains less powder and 3 times cheaper brass.
