7mm Popularity?
 

I know there are a ton of 7mm wildcats etc... but in order of popularity can you list the top 5 or so...?

Kinda curious where the 7mm STW falls? growing? dying? here to stay?

Isn't the 7mm RUM dead/dying on life support?

I'm mostly interested in 7mm RM or larger mags in 7mm.

The 7mm wby is very close to the Rem.Mag isn't it? a 7mm-300wby would be nice, but that's essentially a 7mm STW right?

above 7mm Rem.Mag. it seems like popular 7mm really drop off a cliff...

I know guys love the 280 and 280AI, but will either ever eclipse the 7mm RM? I kinda think if you want a fast 7mm a guy will just get a 7mm Rem.Mag.

I think the 7mm-08 will only continue to get more popular.

unless a 7mm-375 Ruger comes along, which is very similar to a 7mm dakota I believe, I'm kinda thinking the 7mm STW seems like the mag over 7mm RM to shine. Or will any 7mm Mag over the rem.mag. never really gain much popularity?

Better make room for the 7x57mm. I think the Weatherby would be ahead of the STW too. JMO

I would put the 7x57 ahead of both the STW and RUM.Both are absurdly inefficient rounds.Admittedly there are those out there that simply have to have the fastest flattest shooting guns but even the old Rem 7mm Mag is pushing it a bit.

Need to add the 280AI to the list. I see more and more interest about it. For the ones you have listed I would say:

The 7x57 is a cartridge with A LOT of history in Europe as well as the US.

I believe RidgeRunner is into 7mm's you should get good input when he see's this thread

what's the future of the 7mm STW vs. 7mm RUM? isn't the RUM dead? dying? which of these 2 will be around or more popular in 10 years?

I read the 7mm RUM runs into pressure problems, and is harder to load for, for the handloader.

I assume the 300 RUM is here to stay but who knows?

the 7mm STW has the 8mm RM which is kinda dead isn't it? the .416 RM should stick around for a while I think, course I hear the 416 rigby is the 416 to get.

From Hodgdon's website, fastest load shown:
7 x 57 - 140gr bullet = 2759fps
7 STW - 145gr bullet = 3209fps
7 RUM - 145gr bullet = 3328fps

Nice thing about classic cartridges, Huh !!!

I got a .338 WM if I need something bigger.

The 7x57 is a grand ole cartridge. It was developed in 1892 and the spanish adopted it as there military round and it has done it all. It was W.D.M. Bell choice of rounds to use for elephant, he shot over 1000 elephants with the 7x57. When the Americans ended up on the wrong end of the 7x57 it prompted the US military to come up with a better cartridge, which was the 30-06.

I was looking for a larger rifle other than my 270 just to have one. I came across a deal I couldn't pass up from a guy that I have been working with. His father had a custom build 7 STW that he shot a few times and he inherited it and doesn't hunt. I didn't know much about the 7 STW but bought it anyway. He let me take it and try it out first. I was impressed and now love the gun. I have not shot thru a crony yet but that thing is cooking. I have since talked to a guy that has two of them built by the same smith that built this one. It is a Rem700 with a schilen heavy barrel that the smith fluted and added a break all on a hogue stock.

Never shot the RUM or an 08 but the WSM and RM are still nice but I think I like the STW better.
