Default 7mm Elk Round

I just got a Browning X-bolt 7mm WSM, and i would like to know what is the best round for elk, 140 grain or 160 grain, there is not that many factory loads for the 7 wsm, but there is a few that i am going to try plus i am going to reload for it as soon as i get the rest of the stuff for the 7 WSM, any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I am trying to reload up some of the Barnes TTSX in 140gr. This is out of a 7mm STW but still a 7mm load. My thinking is that I could stick with the one load and not have to adjust anything for deer - whatever I am hunting. I have heard great things about the barnes so I am giving them a try. If the wind ever stops blowing I will get out and shoot the loads we loaded up and see what I can come up with.

I would go with the 160 for greater penetration.

Here's a lilst of 7mm WSM ammo from Midwayusa. The only two loads I would not use are the two 140 grain ballistic tips. Outside of that any of them are more than capable of taking an elk.

I dont have a 7mm mag but I do have a 280. I have had really good luck with 154gr. Hornady SST Interlock on deer, they are super accurate out of my rifle, so I am thinking for elk next year I will try the Hornady 154gr. Interbond and see how they work. I havnt been impressed with the Accubonds, although the only gun I have tried them in is my 338 Win Mag., I Tried the 225gr. Accubonds and never could get them to shoot as good as the Hornady 225 SST, or the Sierra 215gr and the 250gr. Game Kings, in my rifle. I have only read good things about the Accubonds, but I know they dont shoot out of my rifle as good as some of the other bullets I have tried.

I was in the same boat this last fall.
I have the 7wsm A-bolt. I switched up to Federal Vital Shock 160 TSX. Great round! Good accuracy and it worked fine on the 3 whitetail I shot-as well as the cow elk.

I won't look for any other round.

With factory ammo, I'd start with 160 Accubonds, Trophy Bonded Tips, and XP3's, and use whichever shoots best through your gun.
