Rem. 870 Express youth model?
 

Looking for a new shotgun for my 13 yr. old brother and this seems to be a good choice. Any ideas on how this shotgun performs? It has a 21" barrell, and shoots 2 3/4" and 3" shells. I have the 870 Express Super Mag SPS w/a 26" barrell and wouldn' t trade it for the world. Is the youth model just as solid? Anyone have any kids w/ this shotgun? If so, how do they like it? price new is $225 - good deal? I' m getting this shotgun for him to hunt ducks, geese, and deer.

They youth model is just like you' re gun with a few exceptions:

The youth model is a 20 gauge
The stock is 1 inch shorter than the standard model
Shorter barrel (you already mentioned that)

You made an excellent choice.

Woops, that' s right, i forgot to mention it was a 20 gauge hehe. I' ll bet he' ll have a blast (pun intended) w/ it this coming year.

go to www.birdman.org and check out the nuke 50. someone else mentioned this gun maybe here or on rimfirecentral.com board, seems like a good choice. check out the video of its performance too as the " cooking feature" is a major selling point

I' d take him down to the gun shop and actually have him pull one up. My 12 year old daughter can shoot my full size 870 okay. But a buddy of my sons would have a hard time since he is a munchkin. If he is a little bigger than average size I' d get the full size. It will save you some bucks when he grows out of it in a year or two.

I agree with zacko. I bought my son a youth when he was 10 and it fit' s him perfect. He has had a lot of sucess with it, on dove, and especially deer. He is now 11 and it still fits him good.

Maybe you should check out the regular 870, with him being 13 he is growing fast and he will grow out of the youth very quick.

Good call fellas - i took him to check it out last week and it fits him perfectly! my 870 SPS is just WAAAAAY to big for him right now. I think the 20 ga. is a great choice for him and he will be able to handle it better than the full size 870.
