.300 WBY is out....300 Win. or 7mm. Rem. Mag.?

Ok...the .300 WBY has been ruled out...which leaves the .300 Win. Mag. or 7mm. Rem. Mag.

I want this custom rifle built in a caliber that will cover 99% of all big game I'm going to hunt...deer to elk/moose.

I don't really think I could go wrong with EITHER the 7mm. Rem. Mag. or .300 Winny. ....just can't seem to decide which to go with.

Anyone been in the same spot picking between these 2 calibers?

opinions?

salukipv1 02-16-2011 01:29 PM

How about a .300 WSM? :) haha

I wish the 7mm RM and .338WM weren't shorter than the .300win.mag., man it really bothers me!

I'd shoot 160gr with the 7mm, 180 with the .300, but the 7mm with 175gr have such high SD's, either or could probably take anything in NA.

You said you were sensitive to recoil, maybe get the 7mm RM.

What are you planning to hunt anyway? mostly? if it was mostly deer and maybe an elk or moose one day, I'd say maybe just get the 7mm.

If you were gonna mostly do elk, and the occasional deer I may say get the .300 win.mag.

Is this going to be your 1 gun for everything?

Do you have a .270win or something? if so that may change things...

jeepkid 02-16-2011 01:31 PM

Either one...I prefer 7mm stuff... ;)

Colorado Luckydog 02-16-2011 01:33 PM

The ballistics are almost identical. You can't go wrong with either.

(PS, the stw will work in your action)

Surprised. I have an STW, and always wished it was a remmag.

I think I got the slowest STW known to man. I am lucky to get 3100fps with 160gr accubond with RL25, H1000, and 7828.

but Charley (mossy) gets 3050fps with 140gr accubond with mid load of RL22 and lot less powder.

Schoolcraft,

I have a 7MM Rem Mag & went to a .338 Win Mag for the big stuff.

I will one day "fill-in" with a .300 WM.

So, my question is; Do you own a medium or big bore rifle ?

Wolf killer 02-16-2011 05:24 PM

I have had to make this same choice before, I choose the 300-win mag.

Bocajnala 02-16-2011 07:49 PM

I'd take the .300, for no reason other than I'd rather have it. I don' think that for your uses that either can be a bad choice.

Note the energy on the 7mm it exceedes the 300win after 300yds.Wind drift is less as is drop on the 7mm.Factor in the recoil is considerably less on the 7mm my choice would be the 7mm. I've shot both, the 300win kicks alot more IMO

Blackelk 02-17-2011 04:48 AM

I prefer the 300 win mag but also agree with Ridge Runner I'd make it a 7mm STW and reach out reach out and touch someone.

But here's my personal load for my 300 win mag and there's a big difference vs. a regular 7mm Rem Mag. And that's at sea level take it to the altitude I live at and it becomes a super magnum at long ranges.

I was looking at a new rifle recently and was considering the 300, 300 WSM, 300 RSAUM, 7mmRM, 7mm RUM but came across a custom built 7mm STW with 30 rounds through it. I studied up as I had never heard of the STW previously. I ended up with the STW and I am all giddy about it after shooting it.

I am currently working on a load with the barnes TTSX in 140 grain. It's just been so windy that I haven't been able to get out and develope it. If I can get them to shoot I will be a happy camper and hunt everything with that one load.

jerry d 02-17-2011 10:58 AM

What is a 7mmSTW ?

Wheatley 02-17-2011 12:57 PM

Remmington 8mm necked down to 7mm.

Sheridan 02-17-2011 03:35 PM

Jerry,

I know you like Chuck Hawks, so I thought I'd give you this link;

.300 Win Mag is the best IMHO....

Jim Williams 02-18-2011 04:55 AM

You can't go wrong. That said, the 300 win mag has a more energy and I noticed you want to hunt moose. That extra energy the 300 win mag has might be needed. I have owned both but now I have just the 300 win mag and I would note part with it. Shooting past 350-400 yd is for the expert shooter. I do not belong in that class. Do you? Jim

thanks sheridan, thats a hot load.checked the ballistics on it it carries more energy than the 300win @ 200yds. whereas the 7mmRM carries more @ 300yds.

Sheridan 02-18-2011 10:13 AM

I'm "good" with my 7MM Rem Mag !

Classic cartridge guy anyway.............."if it any broke don't fix it" !

WOW!!!!! big difference in size.So I'm guessing the purpose of the 7mm allen would be to get better preformance @ longer distances..am I correct?
