Default 243 Win Twist

I have a 22-250, and 204. But considering a 243win for shooting 55-65gr varmit loads.

I used to load for 243 but only for deer applications with 100gr bullets.

Is there an ideal twist for 55gr loads

I was just reading Dan Lilja's page, and they recommend 12 and 13 for 60gr bullets.

That would suck. The gun would definately be a varmit only. I doubt 107 long range bullets would do well.

Yea a 1/8 for 105-107's and a 1/7 for the 115's...

I've shot 87's out of my 1/8, but never anything lighter so I don't know how they would perform in a fast twist barrel...??

.... You'd pretty much be stuck with a "varmints only" gun with those twist rates.. Don't think 100+ gr. will shoot worth a hoot in it. My Lilja bbl. 243AI has a 9" twist. Ordered it that way for a little heavier slug. So far it shoots the 85 gr. Sierra HPBT lights out. Been running some 95 gr. VLD's with mixed feelings. May move up some this spring when I can get more bench time...

Yea, your right. Maybe I will pass and use the funds to make a 300whisper I have been wanting.

Wait a minute; What's wrong with a dedicated predator gun ?

My .243 is a Remington 700 SPS DM with a 24" barrel and a 9 1/8 twist.

It shoots the bullseye out of targets at 100 yards using with 75 gr. V-max bullets.

When I take them with that set up, they go right down !!!

BTW - I also have a Savage .204 with a Harris bi-pod on it, but the .243 is my walking stick.

My gunsmith loves these things. Barrel life he said is 1000 rounds, but I am betting below that.

Pretty awesome gun.

I'm a firm believer that overstabilization doesn't happen to the point you could tell it without a micrometer, my 223 8 twist will outshoot my 9,10, and 12 twist 223's with 55 gr bullets, and its a long throated wylde chamber, but still shoots into the .2's pretty often with cheap reman ammo.
RR
I have always wondered what happens with overstabilization other than bullet deformation.
