6mm br what u think about it?

Just got my new gun a 6mm br shoots .250 groups at 100 yards i cant wait to bust some coyotes with it was wondering what yall thought about this cartridge my buddy talked me out of a 22-250 and built this one for me.

jeepkid 02-13-2011 06:19 PM

Better barrel life then a 22-250 and one of the most accurate cartridges ever made!

Oh, and post some pics!!!

bigcountryextreme 02-13-2011 07:31 PM

I am tore between that and 6.5-284. I can get better BC's out of the 6.5. I like this cartridge myself.

salukipv1 02-13-2011 08:52 PM

what kind of velocity does the 6mm BR get?
and/or what's the parent case of this cartridge?

I kinda like the 6mm-284, but don't have one, just the lonely .243win. for me right now...

The 6BR and the 6.5x.284 are designed for different tasks, and perform their best in different walks. The 6br is a SWEET recoiling 0-600yrd rifle, and affirming itself as one of the top choices for 300yrd competitors (free-recoil). The heavier 6.5-.284, on the other hand, is carving out it's niche in 600-1,000yrd matches. A lot of guys DO use a 6br for long range matches, but it's hard to argue that the heavier bullets of the 6.5mm with such high BC's have their advantages in the wind. Especially for F-class shooting where the marking/scoring of targets after each match complicates the wind contributions.

I have a savage custom action switch barrel rig in 6.5-.284 that performs incredibly well. I've only fired a 6br a few times, and definitely appreciated being able to shoot free-recoil.

I think it'd be hard to go wrong with either, but the 6BR definitely has it's advantages for the shooter, the 6.5 for the wind...

Umm, okie dokey.

6BR has better than twice the barrel life of a 6.5-284. It has no parent cartridge and it will shoot a 108 Berger at 2780fps with 30 grains of Varget. Sweet shooting rifles.

Joemontana, is your gun building buddy named Will and live in PA?

joemontana 02-15-2011 03:58 PM

yes he is my go to guy for anything gun known eachother for a while now

What 6br chamber did you go with? Did you go with no turn neck?

One other guy ask about posting a picture of your gun, I think you should, it is a beauty.

bigcountryextreme 02-15-2011 07:34 PM

I know its in a different league, but why not a 243 win?

Yep, I saw that one. When you get home take a good pic and post it. I think that is one sharp looking rifle. I think you'll have a ton of fun with it

wilbur300wsm 02-16-2011 04:20 PM

hi fellas, i'm new to THIS site. i learned about it from gunnermlr and joemontana. guess i'm the lucky guy who gets to build guns for others to enjoy. the one gun i did for joemotana is a 6mm br. the specs are as follows;

Bat vr action
kreiger 14tw ss fluted 19" long
hs precision model 7 varmit stock
(filled in and reinletted for the Bat action)
(the stock is then dipped in a custom carbon fiber)
ss rem trigger set at 1 1/2 lbs
rw hart custom one peice base and rings
leupold 6.5 x 20 efr target scope
lapua brass
nosler 55gr bt
varget powder (vel. 3540fps)
shoots low .2s ,if you do your part

both gunnermlr and i use the 6 br's for benchrest comp. with the heavier 105s and 108 bergers going high 2700 to low 2900,the perform quit well from 200yrds out to 1000. they are fun to shoot, with a lot less recoil the 6.5s and larger cal. i'll try to figure out how to post a pic enjoy

jeepkid 02-16-2011 04:35 PM

Yea post some pics, I have a 100% carbon fiber stock but it would be much cheaper to get one dipped for the look!!

You can always PM me for my e-mail then I can post the pics for you...but if you have a photobucket its super simple to post them here...

this is the only pic i have ,sorry, it's nearly done at this stage. click on pic and zoom to see the carbon fiber on the stock

wilbur300wsm 02-16-2011 05:06 PM

jeepkid, we've used the kevler pounder stocks from brown precision before, nice and light but a pain in the backside to work with. the place that does the dipping for me is called liquid illusions here in pa. they do very good work, they've done qiute a few stock for us.

jeepkid 02-16-2011 05:17 PM

I like the look of it! What do they charge?

Heres mine, its a Manners MCS-T

wilbur300wsm 02-16-2011 05:26 PM

jeepkid, for hunting stock, it's $95. you can get semi gloss or high gloss. talk to kevin, they have lots of diff patters to choose from

Jeepkid, that bolt handle is cool, is that a remmy action and if so who did the work to the bolt?

joemontana, you could have bought my heavy gun, that'd be the one to shoot across the canyon behind your house. but it sold already. hoping to go on a muley hunt next

wilbur300wsm 02-17-2011 07:50 AM

a big .338, 'bout 13-15lbs, with a break should be the next one. IMO. you got two elk with your bow, i think now it's time to crack an elk from a little more distance than 7 yrds!!! your wsm i built for you is good for 'bout 400yrds, i'm thinking more like 800 to 900 with a big .338 across the mountain.

Jeepkid, I met Karl Kampfield at the Worlds Championship Groundhog match in Johnstown, PA. He is a heck of a nice guy and had a few nice rifles at the match to show and also compete with. Your gun looks real nice. Thanks for posing the picture

jeepkid, the big heavy is in 300wsm, throated for 210 bergers. with a 31" broughton tube, 63.5 grs of h4350 pushes 'em 3140fps. it's shot as small as .794" at 500 yrds, and 3.8" at a 1000yrds. both gunnermlr and i use the 300wsm and 6br for matches. this pic is from 2010 s dak. p-dog trip. trying to get one at 3261yrds. close but no kills. we've been at this quest for a couple of years. so far my longest confirmed is 2217yrds. enjoy

the blue gun is from 2009 also a 300wsm with 210's, trying for 3000+ yrd kill
the big guy in the pics also shoots a 300wsm

the scope mount is purpose built, to dial in as much as 1100moa. elev. and over 300moa. of windage. you dial primary moa. in the scope mount, lock it down, then secondary click in the scope knobs.
examp. 267moa needed, dial 260moa. into mount, lock it down, dial 7moa. in scope knobs. pull the trigger

Sheridan 02-18-2011 10:10 AM

"the scope mount is purpose built........"

I figured........

You sure make it sound easy !

3,000 yard shots on prairie dogs...............I'm not there yet !!! LOL

..........but some really cool rigs !

I tip my hat to you guys; that's for sure !

once you have the right setup, it is pretty easy. only problem is, getting the little buggers to stand still long enough 'till the bullet has time to get there. time of flight at that distance is just over 7.6 seconds. a lot can happen, (cook an egg, bake a cake) back to the original thread, the 6mm br is fun out to a 1000yrds with the right bullet

joemontana 02-18-2011 07:13 PM

yeah thats my gun to i got make sum more money them we can build the 338
