well, a rifle will give ya distance..a pistol is fun too.
i got a henry 22 lever action, was about $300 i guess, but have seen lots of 22 fer less than that. auto's are cool, but everyone i ever seen had a jammin problem, or had a jammin problem story. they are cool while they are cycling though

If you want a good semi-auto look at a Ruger 10/22. You should be able to find one for less than $200. I've got three of them, and one of them I used to shoot every single day all through high school. Always at least ten shots through it when I got home from school. No jamming problems, but I always kept mine pretty clean. So maybe ppl don't clean theirs well. It's been good for hunting too. I've taken squirrel, rabbit, groundhogs, racoon, coyote and muskrat with it.

If you wanna good semi auto the ruger 1022 is probobly the most popular I like them however I don't own one. Also the marlin model 60 is good my favorite is a Remington 552 speedmaster I got mine used for 75 bucks they run usually 100-150 used but new there 350 or 400. If you wanna bolt action you can't go wrong with a marlin. Henry and marlin both make great leveractions. Don't be afraid to buy used there just as good but cheaper

I've had a Marlin 25 for years, and it has been worry free and a very pood shooter with most ammo

I went a little overboard, and got a CZ 452. It's a long barreled bolt action .22, but it looks nice and shoots well too.

If you want a simple and nice semi-auto .22 you can't beat the Ruger 10/22. My father has one, and I used that to learn how to shoot as a kid. A great little gun, and reasonably priced.

Savage is your best bet for low cost and accuracy.

You can probably find a used model 60 at a low price. They are inexpensive new, and used ones are common.
