Cost of 7mm08 Ammo

What are guys paying for a box of factory ammo? Wally world only had Win. Supreme @ $40 a box my local gun shop had Rem. Cor-lok's also @ $40 a box. I'm looking to buy a new rifle in this chambering but the cost of ammo is ridicoulous!! I'm sure it's cheaper if you reload but I dont.

$24 per box at wholesale hunter.com. Under $22 per box by the case. I bought a case of the hornady sst superformance from them, that was as cheap as I could find it.

Yeah, $40 is ridiculously high. I get at Academy here in Houston for $22-24 a box, and Remington usually has some kind of a mail in rebate...

Are you sure they didn't have their 7mm-08's stacked on the shelf over a 7mm Rem Mag price tag?

ammo into N.Y.

Yeah that's what I thought it would be about $5-$6 more a box than 243 ammo

I'm thinking this caliber is a perfect canidate for hand loading.

Sfury 01-01-2011 01:26 PM

I use Winchester Ballistic Silvertip ammo. It costs $33 per box. Standard ammo costs between $22.00 and $24.00 a box.

There are other premium options that cost $40 or more per box.

Pygmy 01-01-2011 02:22 PM

Jerry... I'll keep my eye peeled for reasonably priced ammo for you..Usually Remington green is the cheapest..

You are right about handloading..The 7mm08 is easy to load for..

The only factory loads that my M700 Mountain rifle has fired was a box that I bought to break in the barrel and get some brass when I first bought the rifle back in the mid 90s..

You can ship ammo to NYS, I use to do it all the time before i handloaded. there is a haz mat surcharge for ammo, powder and primers, I think its 25$ or something even if its just a few boxes so it might not be worth it, unless youre buying alot at once. Somtimes when I buy ammo and primers on gunbroker, sellers dont charge the hazmat fee because they just put it in a flatrate USPS box and dont say what it is.

Ok thanks for info guys.Pygmy that $40 was the rem. green..........but that guy is known to be a little pricey. I paid $32.50 for a box of .35rem. in that store!

jerry, do you know anyone that does reload? you could buy all the stuff to reload that caliber and have them reload for you if you trust them.

No Slim I dont but I'm gonna start doing it myself.

Pygmy 01-02-2011 06:02 AM

Jerry ... For factory loads try www.natchezss.com.

The last time I checked with them they had the Rem Green 140 grain PSP for $24.95.. Probably it would be better to order more than one box to help offset the shipping/hazmat fees...

As far as them shipping to NY..I live upstate and I have ordered shotshells by the case and pistol ammo from them through the mail with no problem....

If you live downstate/Weschester Co. it might be different..That's a whole different world down there..:s4:...

Good luck..When you begin reloading, let me know..I can get you started in the right direction as far as powder choices and bullets are concerned..

stapher1 01-02-2011 06:25 AM

That's the whole reason i started reloading 12 years ago, that and the quality of ammo sucked.

GTOHunter 01-02-2011 09:05 AM

The most I paid for my 7mm-08 shells was at a local Hardware Store..the prices was $29.00 + tax for Winchester 140 grain.I wasn't happy with that price but it was close to Deer Season and I didn't want to run around looking for them all over Town?I think the other price was around $24.00 for a box of 20 shells (Remington Brand).I have seen the .270 WSM shells sell for around $35.00-$40.00 per box of 20 but that price You gave was way too high in my opinion! :(

It is perfect... you can make some really sweet shooters!

Last I checked, you only have one 120gr offering factory loaded... and its not even a real premium bullet. Reloading is certainly no cheaper, but it is fun and rewarding.

As far as factory ammo goes... no such thing as a bargain cartridge anymore. .223 maybe... but what you'll find cheap will not be a serious deer round and its illegal in a lot of states anyway.

The 7-08 is less expensive than a lot of your standard belted mags, and really about the same price anymore as your .270 30/06 class stuff.

30/30 still seems to be the cheapest to me... but you will love the 7/08!

$28 a box from Walmart for the Winchester silver box 140 gr.
