As I stated, I am in this quandry myself right now. I have several 7mm's and 300's. And leaning to keeping my 300win mag.

I'd not shoot an animal with a 300, that I wouldn't with a 7. Though I prefer the 7.

BC,

So to summarize the 300WM will only be flatter than the 7mm at the heaviest weight?

As I get more into shooting the only think I've been really focused on is drift. Not so much the flatness of a cartridge.

I'm having a 300 WM custom built right now that is throated to shoot the Hornady A-Max at 208gr. It's a really long high BC bullet.

It really depends on the bullet chosen. The example I was pointing out is with accubonds. But most of the time, the 7mm will be flatter, and get from point A to B faster which is drift.

Close you eyes and pick one. Either will do the job on any game in North America.
That being said it wouldn't be my 1st choice for the great bears ,brown and polar with well constructed bullets even they are capable of handling even that job. I would dare say 303 Brit and 30-06 have probably killed more bear in Alsaka and Canada than eveything else put together.

Couldn't you say this same thing on 95% of the topics on here? But I think these guys enjoy talking about these things.

A 7mm w/160gr. bullet has a sectional density of 283.
A .30cal. w/180gr. bullet has a sectional density of 271.
Would that make the 7mm a more effective cartridge for killing game?

I could swear that I've seen a graph of the 7mm Mag vs the 300WM that after about 500 yards the 7mm Mag was below the 300.

Am I off my rocker?

None of those numbers translate into effective killing. All they do is tell you how effective said bullet is at penatrating an object. Bullet construction has just as much if not more to do with killing game as sectional density does. Am I right?

It depends. If you compare equal launch to equal launch which is about the comparison of 160gr 7mm to a 180gr 300WM, it only depends on the BC at that point.

Larger BC wins. BC take in account wieght, and bullet shape and momentum.
