Default Newbie question about duck hunting gun

I just moved down to southern Tennessee. Some guys I know have invited me to go duck hunting when the season starts.

I never bird hunted before and I don't want to put lots of money into a gun and then not like the sport.

Any recommendations on a shotgun for a beginner?

That's a hard gun to go wrong with (the Remington 870). I would stick with a standard double barrel, but that's my preference.

Serious waterfowler really wants a semi. I go with browning golds myself. Used to use an 1187 for years without trouble. Waterfowl is much more difficult to take down than you pheasant or grouse. Especially if you plan to use steel shot, which is what most of us can afford.

Saying all that, I think its just std operation for every gun owner to own at least one 870 express. I sure don't take em duck hunting, but you got to own one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know the 870 Express is a good starter gun. If I find that I like duck hunting or at least that I don't suck at duck hunting, I figure I can buy a more expensive gun.

I was wondering about a Mossberg, too. A local store has a basic model with a 28 inch barrel used but like new for $230. It's the model here: http://www.gunshopfinder.com/mossber...berg_50104.asp

Is that going too cheap for a starter gun?

The one in the link was a .410, which is absolutely not what you want for duck hunting. If the model they have in stock is a 12ga, then it would make a very fine starter gun, at a good price. Good luck!

For the money, go with a Remington 870 3". They aren't very expensive, easy to clean and get parts, very reliable.

......Have you thought about seeing if you can borrow a gun to use before you go out and buy one?
