For .270 Users

What is best, most accurate factory load you' ve found for your .270? I' m looking to try a new load this year and need some suggestions. Thanks!!!

P.S. If it helps, I' m using a Ruger M77.

RE: For .270 Users

Hornady 130 gr boattails and SST, Federal 130 gr. Nosler Ballsitic tips and seirra Boattails and Winchester 130Gr Ballsitic tips all produced great groups in my 270 Abolt, for deer or antelope hunting. If I was needing a tougher load then the 140Gr Winchester Failsafes would be my choice, for elk/moose type game.

Mine likes Hornady' s 140 grain light magnum (1/2" groups at 100 yards) but I hope that there new one with the 130 grain SST will be as accurate. They have the SST for handloads, but last time I checked they were not in factory ammo yet. They are supposed to have them out before this fall though.

The SST should hold together better than the interlock in the 140' s which are basically the same thing as a core lock. Pretty good unless you hit a big bone.

Mine shoots most any factory load with very good groups. Right now I' m using Hornady Custom 130 grain SST' s. Up until my scope went south 3 shot groups at 100 yards were in the 1/2 inch range.

The SST was available for 270 and other calibers in the custom factory ammo last fall, you should have no problem finding it at most shops. The new interbond by hornady is suppose to be available as well in the custom factory line up this fall, which has the same characteristics as the SST but a bonded bullet to ensure better retention. Never tried this bullet so I can' t comment, but it sounds good in theory. However for deer the 130 gr SST will more than get the job done and I haven' t seen to many guns who didn' t shoot them well either.

Same as txhunter, I like the Hornady Lt. Mag 140 gr. Different rifles may like different factory loads so you may have to do a little experimentation. One thing I do not like are the ballistic tips, have had to trail too many shot by buddies in the past.

Thanks for your suggestions. I' ve been shooting plain vanilla Federals up until this year. They' ve worked just fine, just not quite as accurate as I like. Since this year at my new hunting spot the shots might be a bit longer, I' d thought I' d change up.

Right now, I' m leaning toward the Hornady 130 SST, largely because I' ve had excellent results with the Hornady loads for my .450 Marlin. Is $23.00 a reasonable price, or have you seen better?

If you have had to trail many bucks shot with ballistic tips blame bad shooting not the bullet.I have taken over 30 head of big game including deer, pronghorn, bighorn, moose and elk with the ballistic tip and have not had to trail one.Not one animal made 50yards after being hit.

when I bought my Browning Abolt 270, the only ammo they had in stock was Remington 130 gr. and they have done great for me so I haven' t switched.

I have a Ruger M-77 that really likes Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip 130gr.

Hmmm...
Each gun is its " own person" , so... What would work in mine or these other folks may not work in yours... so just a few pertinent facts would help out if you' d be so kind:

(1) Length of Barrell?
(2) Twist of Barrell?
(3) Loads you have already eliminated for your 270
(4) How well is it shooting now? MOA?
(5) Ranges commonly shot now & ranges aspired to
(6) Do you reload?

Plus, it is a bit relevent to match the tool to the job so....
What are we shooting? ---
(1) paper,
(2) prairie dogs,
(3) woodchucks,
(4) pigs,
(5) deer,
(6) bear,
(7) elk -- might make just a little difference on which accurate load is recommended.

Never Go Undergunned,

Ok, here' s more detail.

1) Ruger M77, 22" barrel, Simmons 3-9x40mm, don' t know the twist for sure.
2) I' m upgrading the scope to a Leupold Vari-x II.
3) I' m shooting 2" groups at 100 yds, but I' m personally disappointed in that
seeing as though I have a Savage 110 that I can shoot 3/4" groups at 100 with Federal Vanilla 130 gr (Hi-Shok). I' d go back to the Savage, except I gave it to my son.
4) I' ve tried Federal 130' s (all of them), Federal 150 Nosler Partitions, Winchester 130 Power Point, Remington 130 Core Lokt. The best so far, believe it or not, is a plain old Federal Vanilla 130 gr (Hi-Shok), but it' s still 2" @ 100.
5) I hunt strictly whitetails and normally shoot less than 100 yds., but I' ve seen some spots on my new club that I can shoot up to 300. I guess you could say I' m trying to cover 0-300 yds as accurately as possible.
6) I don' t reload.

I have typically been able to shoot very accurately with other guns and I suppose 2" groups aren' t bad, I just thought I could do better. So I' m changing the scope and possibly the mounts and I thought this would be a good time to try some new factory loads, so I' m looking for suggestions

My Ruger M-77 will only group well ( 3/4 to 1" ) with Winchesther Supreme Ballistic Silvertips.
I tried Remington: 130 & 150gr. Core-lokt.
Federal: Hi-Shock 130gr.
Fereral Premium: Barnes-X 130gr. & Nosler ballistic tip 130gr.
Hornady custom: 140gr.

The Federal Hi-Shock came in a distant second place. The others were shooting a pattern not a group.
I did shoot an Antelope buck at 70-yards in the front shoulder with a Federal Hi-Shock. The bullet blew up on impact. The hole the bullet left was large enough to see the heart through. No damage was done to the heart. I put a second one in his neck & that put him down for the count.

Wolf Killer:

I haven' t had issues with the performance of the Federal Hi-Shok(just accuracy) as they have passed though everything I' ve shot and expanded well. I' ve probably killed 25+ deer with them. I don' t know what issue you had, except that perhaps that bullet doesn' t do well against a shoulder bone. I' ve never hit the shoulder bone yet.

Thanks for the vote for the Winchester Rounds. I may try them to see how they do.

With all that said out of all those shells you tried, I would say its time to go to the gunsmith. Alot of people will tell you " every gun is different" which is true to a point, but there is usually some underlying reason, a gun can' t shoot 1.5" groups every time at 100 yards. This isn' t mad voodoo. Maybe excessive throat, lugs need to be squared, bolt face isn' t squared, not free floated, loose action to stock, pillar bedded, glass bedded, crown recut. Options are endless. You have tried some decent ammo it sounds like. Maybe get someone to load you some long rounds. I would if you were close and I knew ya.

My best friend has a Model 70 with same bad luck. So I reloaded some for him, with 47gr of 4064 and 3.30" COL, with 130 grain Sierra bullets. Now it will shoot 3/4" all day out of this ultralight. But now works me to death reloading for him. Thats ok though.

Also, try to shoot one round, and let cool min 10 min, and see how she does. Alot of people expect 1" groups of a three shot volley within 90 seconds. Just aint' the case always.

I have a Ruger 77 MK II in 270 Win. The first time I took it to the range it was shooting 3 inch groups, or should I say patterns, with anything I fed it. I took it home and stoned that 7 lb trigger down to about 3 lbs, floated the barrel and bedded the action. Took it back to the range and shot 1 inch groups with Remington and 1.5 with Winchester. I don' t know why Ruger insists on all that upward force on the barrel.

RE: For .270 Users

I agree with the Winchester Fail-safes for bigger game and would try them for groups also. I never shot a factory load through any of my 270' s but I used a lot of nosler Ballistic tips while loading for them. I di have a little trouble with Ballistic tips in a couple of 7 MM Mags I have seen them deflect off of bone and turn 90 degree corners at close range with the Magnum.
