.22 Hornet
I have always liked this little round. I have killed coyotes and fox with it and it performed very well. I have never used it to hunt deer. But my uncle does and has never had any problem dropping big maine bucks with a well placed shot.
What do you guys think about this round? |
I'd rather use a 30/30 in the parts of Maine I've hunted in.

I would'nt vow for a vitals shot pass 50 yards... I'd trust something in the .3+ cal. But that's just me.
Go 22s!!:D |
I use a K-Hornet, in a BSA Martini. It's a tack driving round that has yet to let me down. I use oit mainly for ground hgs, fox and beaver, but I would feel comfortable useing it on deer if I didn't have the 308 Win..

killed quite a few bruisers with the hornet, including a 200lb 11 pointer, theres no replacement for bullet placement.

A .22 hornet was and is a sharp shooting rifle! As stated a well placed shot and it will knock down almost anything it hits. They shoot quite flat and carries quite a ways.. The sad part is now every one you look at it appears to have just the scope mount and not so much of ths sites I enjoy using from time to time.

Nice buck and hog!! I dont have a full body pics right here but heres the antlers to my uncles 230 lb and 210lb deer he shot a few years back. Dropped both on spot with a hornet!:fighting0007:

Just layed the smack down on this bruiser this morning at day break.
165 yd shot, my longest to date with the Hornet. He folded like a lawn chair. ![]() ![]() |
theres no replacement for bullet placement. A 45 grain Hornet bullet in the ear beats a 180 grain .300 Win Mag bullet in the guts hands down. Congrats on the mornings kill. |
good shot zrex. have you ever done anything to improve the trigger pull on that thing. I've got the same gun (nef) and pullin the trigger feels like pulling rusty nails out of a board...lol

yes sir had the trigger worked sometime back, its around 2 1/2 -3 lbs. I sighted it last week at 50 yds and it did a clover leaf on 3 -3 shot groups, around a 1/4 inch with my handloads. At 50yds it puts me .4 high at a 100 and dead on at 130yds and 3.5 low at 200yds |
I'm just starting to handload for my hornet. What bullets and loads do you use ? Do you take head/neck shots or does heart/lung shots work as well?

Ive used 45 gr hornadies and 50 gr nosler bt handloaded with equal success also remington 45gr HP's factory loads with equall success. All my shots are to the neck of deer and the head of hogs, everything has gone straight down. the only thing i shot in the body was a small 50lb pig, with rem 45 gr hp's, it had like 3 exit wounds, also went straight down from about 25 yds from a stalk I put on him. |
I have a CZ527 American w/21.9 inch Barrel and single set trigger. It wears a VXII 3-9x33mm EFR It does Sub-MOA with these loads.
12.6grs of LilGun, CCI-500 primer, 40gr Berger HPV, @2980fps. 12.5grs of LilGun, CCI-500 primer, 45gr Speer SP, @2900fps. AA1680, Federal 205 primer, 40gr Sierra SP, @2720fps. You must use the CCI 500 SPP with LilGun as is listed in Speer latest manual. The AA1680 load I forgot the charge weight but its out speers or Hornady manuals. The Speer and Sierra are the hornet bullets, the Berger is not a hornet specific bullet. I user the Lee Collet neck sizing die. This is my Varmit ONLY gun I have much better big game cartridges like these: 270win, 35rem, 358win, 35whelen. |
