270 win 140 grain good enough for elk?
I have a tikka t3 lite 270 Winchester and i shoot 140 grain accubond round with, i am wondering if that is enough gun for elk or should i try something else, and if so what would you suggest, i am not looking for something that is going to kick like a mule but i know there are other more powerful guns that will not have a whole lot of kick to them, so any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I would opt for a 140gr barnes TSX over the nosler. But I guarantee you, if you hit in the boiler room, he will die and probably 100% passthru.

Guaranteed the 270 is enough for elk. But to be safe I wouldn't want to try an bust a shoulder. Behind the shoulder would be better. If you want to go a bit heavier and not be kicked too hard you can always move up the the ol 30-06 with 180 Barnes TSX bullet.

Yup, it'll work....if you're a handloader I'd suggest you use the 160 grain partition.....but the 140 will do the job.

Absolutely it will kill an elk. Don't let any one tell you other wise.

yep, one of my friends use the 130grn Win silvertips, knocks them down

Between my father and myself we've taken over 40 elk with a 270 win using 130 gr Speer boat tails. Not one time have we ever lost an elk and not very many occasions shot more than one or two shots. You don't even have to be a sniper to shoot elk with a 270 win. It will blow through both shoulders on a elk just like a 30-06 or any rifle at closer ranges. But who wants to waste meat? And if you build the right load it's flatter and over powering a lot of larger calibers at 500yds. Am I a 270 fan heck ya it was built for how I like to shoot. But I also like my 300 WM that's a honey with 165 grs. Threw that in there so it wouldn't seem bias. LOL

how about a 130gr TSX?

270 Winchester 130 grain silvertip handloaded hot. Complete pass through. They don't move. Just stand there for a few seconds and fall over.

sine i don't reload, how would these 4 choices be for elk?

The most disgusting chapter in my hunting career of late was thanks to a poor shooter and fancy Winchester XP3s .270s. After blowing a leg off a deer with the first shot and crippling the poor buck with the second, I finished him off with a cheapo CoreLokt.
I asked when the last time was that he took his rifle out and practiced. He showed me his fancy box with a $40+ label still on it and said, "with ammo this expensive, I can't afford to practice". My point is simply this - if you intend to use any of those fancy boxes hunting, plan to burn up one or two pre-season becoming proficient with them. Premium bullets won't make up for poor shooting. Conversely, a competent rifleman can often take game cleanly with othewise "inadequate" calibers, or with "cheap" bullets. And yes, your .270 is absolutely adequate for elk. Good hunting. |
My list would include (in order):
Barnes TSX Nosler Partition Nosler AB, Hornady IB or Innerlok Only way I'd use the Accubond is if it shot noticably better then the first 2. I've used it to harvest both elk and moose from a 7mm rem mag and 338wm. Yes it works but I prefer the slugging of the Barnes TSX on the chance you connect with shoulder bones. When I used a 270win for such animals my choice was partitions and never was dissappointed. Though they aren't always the easiest to get great groups with like some of the other we have to choose from today. |
