A real eye opener today--

Got out to the range today to sight in the new 06 and maybe tighten up the groups from the .204. There was a young guy and his younger cousin, at the opposite end of the 100 yard range. He was a friendly type and asked me if I could look at his gun and figure out why they were not hitting the target.--This was my first look at one of the combo guns sets, a Remington 770 with a bottom of the line Bushnell on it. I wasn't aware Remington even made anything like this and can see why you all have advised against buying them. I tried to at least bore sight it for them because the crosshairs were way right and high, but the crosshairs wouldn't stay set, just kept snapping back. I told them I was sorry, but couldn't help them with it. He had just gotten it back from Remington, had to be sent in to have the jammed bolt repaired. What a waste of money. All of you advising against buying these combination guns were absolutely right and I hope the new members listen----

The Remington 710/770 rifles are pure trash, I have been warning folks about them on this forum for years. I would recommend putting out a little more cash and getting something like a Remington SPS, Weatherby Vanguard/Howa 1500, or a Savage 110/111, they are leaps and bounds ahead of the 710/770 in terms of quality.

I was just shocked because I've owned several Remington 700's over the years, all of them troublefree, well made and accurate and I had no idea they even made anything like the 770. I can understand any company manufacturing something for the low end buyers, but this is pretty sad from an outfit like Remington. It's also sad that he was told by the retailer that the scope had been factory mounted and bore sighted and he was ready to go---but of course, that's just business as usual---

Too many are unwilling to spend much at all for a decent firearm. Now while it should function with a certain minimum amount of performance, you do get what you pay for in most cases.

I think Remington was trying to compete with Savage and others in the value priced rifle category, the only problem is that they made a rifle which is actually worse than the competition in that price range. Obviously, a rifle in the $350-$500 bracket isn't going to have a gorgeous piece of wood on it, or any kind of hand engraving, but at the very least it should be durable, reliable and functional, of which the 770 is neither.

I don't blame this on the people who owned Remington in the past, but with the corporation that now owns Remington where a corporation like Walmart or a chain store like Dicks comes along and tells them that there is a market for cheaply made guns - in the price range of about $350.00 - with a scope.

All you have to do is put your name on it and we will sell it.
Kind of like buying out KIA and putting Cadillac on the hood.
It's still a KIA!

Their other mistake was to cheapen the 7600 pump rifle.
Any gun manufacturer that openly tells it's customers that a 3 inch group at 100 yards with a 30-06 Springfield is an acceptable amount isn't going to stay in business very long.

The problem is - I see these commercials on television all the time where someone is bragging how much money they saved. You don't have to pay your taxes - hire a lawyer. You don't have to buy a Chevrolet - buy a KIA, you don't have to get 13 miles to the gallon - I get 40. You don't have to buy name brands - buy a Chinese piece of crap. Save your money, put it in your own pocket and keep it there. Then the country can't figure out - why they put out billions of dollars in aid for corporations, but they can't balance the budget because the other corporations are not paying any taxes.

You would hope that when you buy a American made product that the money from the sale of the product would stay in this country and you would hope that when you spend $350 on something that you would get $350 worth of something. When a company openly tries to deceive you by thinking that the number is similar and that maybe the barrel and action is the same quality and the only difference is the stock and the finish. You will always have some sucker that will buy it for himself or his kids because he / she wants to save a couple of dollars. When you find out that it is junk and has no resale value - you are stuck with it or you just lost your investment.

That is the reason why all my older guns are Remington's and Winchester and Browning's and all my new guns are Browning's.

To compete with Savage in that price range they need to just lower the price of the 700. The Savage model 10's that are in that price range are competitors of the Remington 700's quality wise. Although the new Savage Edge is cheaper in both quality and price, but it didn't come out until long after the 710/770 series.

That being said, Remington doesn't seem to make anything of much quality anymore imo. I'd buy a Savage in a heart beat over a new 700.

While I like nice firearms as much as anyone, you don't get much more accurate than you can get from a $400 Savage Model 10 or 110 from Walmart. They usually shoot sub moa groups, and are great rifles at a great price. Sure the stock could be nicer, but it's decent and that's about the only downfall to them. One of those and match it up with a nice scope, and you have a great rifle for not much money.

The Marlin XL-7/XS-7 line is another great budget gun. So nowadays there are some quality guns that are inexpensive in price yet still great guns.

Seems like what you get for higher prices now adays is nicer wood stocks and nicer fit and finish, but that's about the only difference.

You can still pick up new 700's for $350. The 7mm-08 that I bought last year will shoot better than I can..., and the .243 that I bought 4 years ago will shoot sub-moa. My personal opinion, based on the four 700's that I own, is that the 700's made now are just as accurate and reliable as 700's made 20 years ago. I suspect that folks who say Remington doesn't make anything worth buying anymore simply have a personal preference for some other manufacturer, and their opinion is based primarily on that bias. The 700 is still an excellent rifle.

The reason Remington can't sell for less is that they are a bloated cow. Too much overhead. Not that it would matter. They can keep their welded on bolt handles.
