Except for certain long range applications, I consider the .300 Mags neither fish nor fowl...
If you think need a REAL increase in power over the 30-06 , go with the .338...
To me the .300s and the .338 both kick hard, bit if I'm going to take that much punishment, I'd rather have a heavier bullet..

While I own several guns between the .30-06 and the .375 H&H, I must say that if you feel you can't do it with a .30-06 then you really need to move all the way up to the .375 H&H.......all that stuff in between is pie filling.
After hunting African plains game which accounts for antelope to 1500 pounds I can attest that if I return it'll be with a .30-06 and 200 grain A-Frames. If I fail with this, I'd fail with the .338 Mag as well!

I don't like these kind of pizzing matches, but the 300 WM has a lot less recoil then the 338.
I do most of my fancy shooting with a 30-06 and a Remington Gamemaster and not my Browning Pump rifle and 300 Winchester Magnum.
I can put 10 shells in the clip and put the deer on the ground, anywhere, anytime, anyplace with the '06..
The 300 Winchester Magnum you are limited to 4 shots and is much more expensive to shoot.

Firepower is of no consequence unless your stopping animals that can kill you. Many times I load up 10 round to carry for the season ,taking 4 or 5 animals and having some left over when the dust settles........I shoot both a .308 Norma Mag and a .338 Win mag.................the .300 mags end where the .338 starts in bullet weight........Harold

338 WM is what I would choose, but you need to assess your needs and decide what is best for you. The 300WM is a fine round also. I went with the 338 because I can go to a larger bullet if I feel the need. Although the 338 does kick pretty good, myself, I don't really feel it except at the bench after shooting multipl rounds. Then, it does start to wear on your shoulder.
