possibly? where might you be going and when? just curious...

.340 Weatherby 225gr@3100fps

.300 RUM
.300 WSM

really any 338mag or 300mag would be ideal in my book.

though anything over a 270 would probably work.

Agree with a few things already said - Remington 700 Stainless in .300WSM or other 300 mag.

I loved my .30-06, but going out west, I wanted something that shoots flat. The .300 WSM was the ticket for me. Get GOOD glass!

the 30-06 and 308's will work at shorter range and with good placement but they really are too light for the task. i personally shoot the 300wsm, but the 7mm, 300 mag, and on up to the 338 are also good choices

Something in 7mm, 30 cal, 8mm or 338 cal would suit my fancy....though I'd opt my 7mmRM given the chance. Plenty of good rifles are around to choose from.

30-06 good out to around 300 yards, elk not that hard to get close to. Never had to shoot over 100yds at an elk and I've shot a few, pretty easy hunt with a high power rifle. Hardest thing is finding them, after that just still hunt in and shoot.

338 is one of the best cartridges ever, flat shooting and hard hitting.
