I was thinking of trying my 410 for deer this yr.I was thinking of picking up some 3" slugs and pattern a few different brands and trying different distances.I will be using my NEF single shot.I know I want need to take to far shots.What are yalls opinions on this.Any tips?

may be legal in your state, but here in IL it's 12-20ga only for shotgun slug/deer.
I had some slugs for a .410, shot them for fun, they seemed so weak, I really couldn't imagine them killing a deer.

Check to see if the .410 is legal first.
My hunting buddy's daughter has taken 2 or 3 does on our land with the .410. All were killed cleanly, but some tracking was required each time. I think all the ones she shot were shot from a tree stand from 40 yards or less. You really should limit your shots to less than 50 yards and wait for a good broadside shot.
A .410 slug is pretty weak for deer hunting, but if that's all you have available, I would say use it, but keep the shots close, and don't try and shoot thru the shoulders or take an angling shot.

I've patterned several .410's on paper and shot through chronographs. The 2 1/2" slugs are essentially worthless. The 3" slugs perform so much better that you'd think they added 4x the powder. LOL
The Brenneke's are wonderful. They are faster and flatter than the other slugs. If your gun will pattern them, then they'll be fine at 50...maybe even 60 yards. No further.
The big problem with the .410's is that you're usually stuck with a smooth barrel w/ a full choke. There are some rifled barrels made custom, and the numbers/groups with them are very impressive.
Shoot it on paper and see what you get. If you're happy, then keep your shots short and you'll be fine.
