check out these section densities... http://www.chuckhawks.com/sd.htm I think I'd either want a very trusting and PH backing me up closely...or a gun barer nearby with something big... I hear ya about always wanting to take something with a certain caliber, for me I really want to take a buff with a .458-500gr bullet. I know they make 160gr bullets for the 270, maybe a 160gr solid? Of course I guess it would depend on what the dangerous game was...cape buff/elephant, vs. lion/leopard, etc...? |
The original post specified North America, right...??..
In that spirit... Small....22 LR medium..7mm08 OR .280 Rem with 120 or 140 grain bullets Large... .280 Rem with 140 or 160 grain bullets OR 9.3 x 62 with 250 or 286 grain bullets Dangerous... 9.3 x 62 with premium 286 grain bullets |
Small
.22lr .17hmr Medium 30-30 .35 rem large 30-06 .338 Marlin express dangerous 45/70 .450 marlin This is pretty hard to do. On the large end it's a pretty easy choice, I'm not a long range shooter so I wouldn't need anything fancy and I'm really partial to lever actions. If I were to plan an elk hunt where I would test my long range skill I'd choose the .338 marlin express but for anything else the 45/70 would work great. It's at the small end of the scale where it's tough to limit yourself. |
You could download the 45/70 for small game and go big for anything dangerous. I consider it one of those "all around" cartridges.

222 Rem. Mag=small; 25/06=medium; 300 Weatherby mag=large; 416 Rigby= dangerous. I could have added alot of different calibers in the small and medium but there is only several choices for large and dangerous
