New 30-06

Hi guys I have recently bought my first rifle. I bought a Savage 110 30-06. My question is should I do anything else besides read manual, understand safety, clean and oil gun before I shoot it for the first time? All opinions and comments welcomed and thanks to those who respond.

Get a good gun case and sling for it, then the best scope you can afford... or at least one worth $200+ dollars. You'll get back in quality and performance per amount of money you are willing to invest.

Also learn that your rifle will shoot different brands and bullet weights and types differently. One type of brand or bullet may not shoot or group well for you. If you try a different one, you could have much better results. It takes some experimenting and shell investing to find what your rifle likes best.

Another thing you should consider is asking in a different thread.... to ask about how to break in a new barrel. Most people don't do this either because they don't know about it, don't care or don't believe it's necessary.

Good luck and heard those Savages are pretty straight shooters right out of the box.

I bought the same gun 1.5 years ago, and broke it in on a big doe last December. Good gun, shoots well, kicks like a 30-06 (which I like:-).

Your pretty much ready to go... I would just make sure you wipe out any excessive oil out of the chamber before you shoot it...

don't forget to bring ear and eye protection when shooting it. Especially ear protection!!!!

Also I alway get the barrel hand lapped and a basic trigger job(and set at 3 lbs) by a professional smith.

As stated a qualiy scope, bases and rings is the most important aspect of any new rig !

"FIRST" rifle .30-06 - you were told right......use double hearing protection (ear plugs plus muffs); it will help you not to develop a flinch.

I'm sorry, the most important thing....................... Enjoy !
