First shotgun?
Alright so I'm going to buy my first shotgun for my 18th birthday. I've used my freinds shotguns for trap shoots ect. I want a 12 gauge for bird/deer hunting. I'm a bow hunter at the moment but i want to use both. My price limit is 300.. Thanks...I'll most likely be buying from gander mnt. If not there dicks sporting goods. So I'f you could tell me of some quality ones for 300
that'd be great thanks

In my opinion theres no better shotgun than the remington 870. As a factory gun you can do whatever you like with it. Later there are so amny aftermarket pieces available that you can specialize it in any way you like. Ive had one since I was 16 and its still kicking though it looks a bit different. Simply change chokes and loads and youre ready to hunt anything.

You can fire slugs from a regular smooth bore barrel though they likely will not be as accurate as slugs fired from a fully rifled barrel and they have considerably less range.
If you want to hunt deer and birds with one shotgun then I suggest saving just a little more money and getting you a combo that comes with a slug barrel and a smooth bore vent rib barrel.
Mossberg makes a model 535 field/deer combo that won't break the bank at about $350. It is a wood stocked, 3.5" chambered gun that comes with a 28" vent rib barrel as well as a 24" rifled slug barrel with rifle sights. The Mossberg shotguns are every bit as rugged and reliable as the 870.
Model number is 45310.
