Offseason cleaning?
Are there any necessary "cleaning/lubricating" things that need to be done in the offseason that keep my Model 70 in nice condition? Right now its just sitting in my case, but didnt know if every so many months I should be taking it out for any touch-ups. Thanks

For me there really is no off season. I generally like to shoot my guns year round. But being deployed right now I had to preserve them for long term storage. I would say just clean them up really well and apply a liberal amount of oil. Then just check them out every so often to make sure there aren't any signs of corrosion.

First thing, take it out of the gun case - it will "sweat" in a gun case.
Use one of these; http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...box.jsp.form23 |
Sheridan is correct. Gun cases are a no-no for gun storage. If you have to leave it cased then get a silicon gun sock, use lots of oil and maybe leave a couple of the moisture packets in the case with the gun.

Awesome, thanks guys.

Yup that's a silicon gun sock.

Follow the good advice already rendered.

Now put it in a closet that doesn't get too hot or too cold.
Lastly, do NOT over oil your gun during storage. Remember your case is for safe transportation, and it sounds like you have a good one ! Hey - make sure to use that model 70 every now and again !!! |

And if someone has a muzzleloader here's a tip a gun dealer gave me..
Take a cleaning patch apply some oil on it and stick it 1/2 way into the end of { muzzle part of the barrel ] this keeps humidity from messing up your muzzle loader. |

I usually make sure its oiled, but not OVER oiled. What effect does that have on it anyway? Just curious
