The .280 / 7mm Express is a fine North American big game cartridge. Loaded with the appropriate bullets it will handle everthing with ease and if you not faint of heart also the big brown bears. When it come right down to ballistics theres a very small difference between a 7mm mag and a .280... I hardly think an animals heart lung area will notice the 100 feet per second and if your shooting the AI it's not even that.. the key, just like every cartridge is the bullet...load it with 160 grain Nosler Partitions and have at it, a good stiff charge of H-4350 and a magnum primer and your in business to stay..I wonder now the newer Berger long range bullets would be, since I have no experience with them I'd just guess it would make the .280 a 700 yard killin' machine..So, fear not, place your order, get yourself some good bushing dies..leave the least of amount of gap in the neck area that you can and enjoy that cartridge for the rest of your days!!

Since I bought my 280 about 8 or 9 years ago, I'm completely sold on it. I bought mine purely because I wanted something a little different and I found a great deal.... never regretted it for a mintue.

Except for an odd day here or there, my 270 never see's the field any more. On paper the difference between a 270 and 280 is much. In the field there probably is no difference at all.

I have more confidence in my 280 than any rifle I have ever owned.

The 280 is the same length as the 270, this would make the case a 270 with the shoulder moved forward .051 thousands, for me there are all kind of advantages to having 280 dies, a reamer and cases. In the beginning the design was to prevent someone from chambering a 280 in a 270, before that there was the 7mm06, chambering the 7mm06 in a 270 chamber could render the rifle scrap.

My favorite die, reamer and case, all are versatile, I form first then fire, most fire to form, moving the shoulder back is easier than moving it forward.

Im pleased now . I think there may yet be a 280 in my near future.

Bullet weight choices? Is the 7mm/284 still limited to 120,140,160,175? Not that those aren't enough. Is there sub 100 e.g. v-max or other blowup HP that is prefered? I really just compared medium to heavy weights.

Midway offers from 100gr-180.There might be some heavier or lighter out there but there's more than enough to choose from in many weights/designs for varmint through dangerous game.Have a look-

I've been usin th 280 Rem for 20 + years. I've owned and loaded for a dozen or more of em as well as a couple 280 AIs. Either is an awesome all around caliber. I've harvested countless deer with both and placed properly with good bullets either kill deer like struck by lightning. If I have to choose only 1 it'd be the regular old 280 Remington. If you already have an 06 I see no practical reason for the 280 AI, now if it's just to have something different then that's cool. I'd say space your chamberings out a bit. based on an 06 case then I'd go either 25-06, 6.5-06 or 35 Whelen. When faced with this same dilemma on my VZ24, I went 257 Roberts.
