270 questions
Hi folks,
I'm a new owner of a Remington 700 ADL 270..and have a few newbee questions. 1. What is the best round / grain bullet for deer medium sized deer 130-170pounds ? I plan to shoot at ranges between 100-250 yds.. 2. I inherited a whole lot of 270 rounds from a friend..all different grains..Can you over shoot a rifle{ Wear one out from shooting too much} if so..about how many rounds..? 3. In your humble opinion ..what is the best 270 round out there for 300 yd shots at medium sized deer..? thanks, C7 |
Thanks gents...
I have a box of of the 130 silver tipped.. |
The cheapo 130gr federals were shooting the best out of my 270.
Used 150gr nosler partitions on vancouver island monster black bears and it got the job done. 130grainers are the way to go I think, now they have the 130gr TSX if you were ever going after something big. |
I always use the 150 grain. I've killed allot of deer with my 270.
|
Congrats Chuck. It's a great round. What's it scoped with?
|
only the scope that came with it..a 3 x 9 Remington...looks like any 1 inch scope will fit in it.

The 130-grain bullet works well in my 270-Winchester. You may have to shoot a few different brands of ammo to find the best accuracy for your rifle. My 270-Winchester likes 130-Grain Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silver Tip ammo the best.
I handload for this rifle and my handloads are 140-grain Nosler Accubond bullets. |
yes sir..I got a box of them silver tipped ..I also have about 200 other rounds,,from 100 grain reloads to boxes of 150.Winchester and Federal//
|
My 270 adl likes 130gr Fedeal Fusions.
|
I agree. 130 grain is all you need for deer. Call me cheap but I like remington core lokt for the shooting range and deer lease. Just clean your gun consistently and you won't "out shoot" it.
|
Congrats Chuck! You got arguably one of the best deer cartridges you could get. Id argue it anyways because I have the same gun.. :D Mine will shoot anything I feed it well with the exception of the 150 Speer Hot cors. I have mostly used the 130 gr blue box federals. Same ones Wal mart sells for 13.97. ive got a 3x9x40 Nikon pro Staff on mine with loopy dual dovetail mounts and low rings. Maybe consider a trigger job for it also. Far as bullet weight... the 270 was built for 130 grainers. It does great with other weights also but the 130's are the ticket for the deer you are describing.
|
I like the 130 grain bullets in my .270 also. Work great on antelope and deer.
|
Thanks to all for the thoughtful replies..
QUESTION?? If my rifle is shot in at 100 yds...will the different bullet grain weight make a big difference on the target ; if I shoot every round at 100 yds? I know it does shooting black powder. Thanks, C7 |
Different results for different guns Chuck. You'd have to shoot them all to make sure. My 150 NP load shots to basically the same POI as my factory 130's. However no 2 guns are gonna shoot the same.

Thanks partner

more than likley the point of impact at 100 yards between 130 grain bullets and 150 grain will not change enough to notice, i have shot many 130s out of mine at deer even tho its sighted in for 150 grain, the 130's hit the mark and did the job...either will work at 100 yards

Congrats on a great rifle. I have a 700 BDL in 30-06 and it loves the cheap Remington core-lokts, you don't need fancy bullets to kill a deer.
|
Thanks fellows.

The 270 Remington 130 grain Core-Lokt bullet is a pretty good performer if they shoot well in your rifle. And they are pretty price effective also. Tough to beat them-especially for the price. No need for anything heavier or a more expensive bullet for deer. Just as long as you can keep it in a 3" to 5" group at 300 yards. Tom.

Congrats on the new toy Chuck.100 yards should not be much difference in any of them just go blast away and find out.I had a .270 in a Savage 110, kicked like a Hillsville mule....LOL.I had just got on the Ballistic tip band wagon .Was loading 130's and did not get very good perfomance from them .But that was because then the BT's were really to explosive at the speeds I was driving them.Went to the 140's and all was well with the world. But as said above the old stand by 130 core-locks will do anything you want if your gun will shoot them like you want. JMHO

I like the 130s for deer and 150s for elk with mine. Although I have shot elk with the 130s as well. The BST 130s do well with my rifle.
I have a Savage 110 and I do agree that they kick like a mule! But I love it while hiking up and down mountains. the light weight is nice. |
You've got a great great rifle. Now to top it off spend 400 or so on a good 50 mm 3x10 scope or so. I would try Hornady Custom Load 130 Interlock bullets. They shoot almost like reloads in one of my .270's. You can get them for around 23.00 a box not bad. They are cooking about 3060 fps and like mentioned 1-2 high at 100yds will be right on at 200yds about 7 in. low at 300yds. Practice at different ranges and maybe try a few different bullets but one thing is for sure YOU DO NOT NEED ANY OTHER GUN FOR DEER!!!!! Good Luck and have fun. You will knock down any deer from Alberta to Alabama.

Appreciate all the replies fellows..

Honestly man their are very few offerings in factory rounds that aren't good out of a 270 out to 300 yards for deer sized game. Just realize you prob shouldnt sight it in at 100 etc..and feel like it'll be good for all of the rounds your buddy gave you. If you put them into groups of identical rounds you should sight it in for each group.
Its not just up and down POI you have to worry about but also left and right. I can reload say 3 different loads with identical bullets just different amounts of powder or bullet depth and the left to right and up and down can be off 3-5 inches sometimes. If you purchase new shells, the cheapo Winchester, Rem CL's or Fed's 130-150 will all work perfectly fine for what you are trying to accomplish. Buying the expensive ammo doesnt automatically mean better groups and premium bullets aren't really needed on deer sized game. Good luck and make sure you take the time to pull stock off, pull bolt out and clean it. Any new or new to you gun should get some TLC before you shoot it. Double check all screws are tight when you put it back together. I just never trust someone else's rifle until I take it apart clean it well and put it back together. |
That .270 will do what you want it too! I use the 130 grain bullets in mine but only in reloads. I have never shot a factory load out of me 700 BDL in the 30 plus years I have used it. Taken whitetails to 300 yards with it and it does the job. Very Accurate rifle and don't worry about shooting it out, it will last a life time. I used to use mine for silohuette shooting and would fire 40 plus rounds per match. Have fun!

Thanks agian for all the information..been very helpful

Its good to see the 270 getting so much love. Its been a wonderful game slayer for a LONG time. If you use one long its hard not to be smitten with it.

chuck - if those reloads you have were not loaded for your specific rifle, i'd either throw them away (if you don't reload) or (if you do reload) pull the bullets, get rid of the powder and primers, and re-use the brass and bullets.
as others have stated, any decent 130gr bullet (that your rifle shoots accurately) will kill deer. if you already have some factory stuff, shoot some groups and see what your rifle likes. good luck. |
Welcome to the expensive part. The easy answer is that there is no easy answer. My suggestion is buy some cheap stuff _ 130 gr. to sight it in and then buy about 4 or 5 different types of ammo and see what runs through em the best. Remember to look at precision.
