Bluing...
Can anyone recommend a good smith to re-blue a rifle? Or a good kit to do it myself?
Thx |
Depends on what you looking for as far as a kit goes. For cold blueing I really like the Blue Wonder product. Fast, easy and quality results.

You have nobody even semi-local???

http://www.shootguns.info/other.htm RR Hot Flash gun finishes is located in whitmore ca. Also thinking about this stuff, www.blackicecoatings.com... Going to also jewel the bolt, but will probably do that myself. |
there are actually alot of guys (non gunsmiths) doing it with pretty good results. when i started my apprenticeship as a machinist my shop gave me a old hot blueing bath meant for screws and small parts and it does a great job on anything shorter then a about a foot. try giving a few tool and die places near you a call, they might have something big enough for a barrel and reciever.

Cold bluing sucks. I thought there were some fellas offering bluing services on Gun Broker....

Oh yeh, if your going to glass bed the action, do your bedding before the Duracoat. Epoxy bedding compound and Epoxy based paint will weld the gun to the stock. Found that one out the hard way, ended up having to cut the stock with a dremel and then chipping the bedding compound off, sand blasting the gun and doing it all over again. |
You won't go wrong with Black Ice Coatings. Lee does a fantastic job!

Hey JK, this might be a little more labor intensive than cold bluing but I've heard good things about it. It's called Niter Bluing, the same type of bluing that high end European shotguns have on them. The active ingredient is potassium nitrate, which is saltpeter, it's the active ingredient in stump remover. You can even do an e-bay, search for potassium nitrate and it's really cheap that way. I've yet to try it, but I bought two bottles of stump remover and a loaf pan to melt it in. I don't have anything to blue right now so I'll probably wind up trying it on some tools.
