7-08 vs 308
 

Other than they're a different caliber what's the difference? I was on Remingtons ballistic site & comparing the 7-08 w/ 140g PSP CL bullet w/ the 308 150g PSP CL bullet. The 7-08 has better ballists on paper.What I mean is that it's got better velocity, more energy & drops less inches as yardage increases.
Could the 7-08 be used on elk sized game?
What would be the advantage to one over the other?

Wondering the same thing. Getting ready to get a hunting rifle and am thinking the 308, 30-06 or the 7-08. SO can not wait to hear some more experienced people answer this one.

Well, the 308 is the 7mm-08s parent case (this is sorta like comparing a 30-06 to a 280). Obviously, one shooting 30 cal bullets and the other pushing 7mm pills. They're both good cartridges for deer, and shooting proper bullets would both be suitable for elk (though I might opt for a touch more oomph there, if given the chance). The 308 probably has more factory ammo choices, and probably has some availability of cheaper ammo, not sure on that. The 7mm08 recoils slightly less. Both are known for "inherent" accuracy by case design. Basically, two capable cartridges. The question is, do you want to shoot a 308 or a 7mm08? That's about all you could ask a deer hunter when it comes down to it.

since the 308 is the same as the 7.62 is it just alittle bigger then the 7mm. That's what i would think.

I hate to say it but is is a same-same situation...
You have a .308 dia. vs. .284 dia. billet out of the same vessel. The deer, pig, goat, elk will not know the difference.

I love my .308.Its all about shot placment. Take a good shot and any of these will do just fine.

Actually you can get .284 BULLETS up to 175 gr. Since you said bullets instead of ammo, I'm assuming you're referring to reloading. My vote is for the 7mm08.

I load anywhere from 100 to 120, to 140, to 160, to 168, to even 175gr in .284".

If I had to explain the joy of using finely handcrafted extremely accurate reloaded ammo that just happens to cost a LOT less it would be like me trying to explain why I like mudding or Harleys-if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand anyway.:confused0024: When you work up a load, you work it up for YOUR exact rifle-not a compromise that works reasonably good in all the rifles out there chambered for that cartridge.

I've seen darn few actual sub moa factory rifles when fed factory ammo BTW.
