Modern Hornet
 

I wish some designer would develop something equivalent to the 22 Hornet in a modern case. With the shrinking sizes of private property and increased density of population it would be great to have a .22 centerfire that was relatively quiet and good for varmits at ranges up to 200 yards.
The little Hornet fills a gap between the rimfires and the .223 type cartridges but it is just too fussy about ammo and accuracy. I have tried Hornets and have given up on them.

........Ever looked at the 221 Rem. Fireball???

I had forgotten about the Fireball. I had one years age in pistol and it was louder than heck, but it may be more tame in a rifle. I shoot a .223 currently for varmits and one of my neighbors uses a .223. You sure can tell when he pulls the trigger on something and I am sure he and the others can hear me just as well. The old Hornet does not use much powder and I used to shoot 45 grain bullets about 2,500 fps with it. The Hornet was louder than a .22 Magnum, but not much. Most of my shots are between 100 -150 yards. I just wish someone would design a case that duplicated the Hornet's manners while giving reliable accuracy and case life.

or how about one of the .17's? I think the .17HMR is based off the .22mag...?

What's wrong with the .223rem? should be quieter than the .204...

Oh, Remington also has the new 17 Fireball too.

Maybe one of the 17 rimfires would work too?

Or if your up to it design your own and use a 30 carbine case and neck it down or some such. 221 fireball short?

Although I appreciate the humor that was obviously intended - the .204 is not the answer. The .204 is the answer to the question "what is a cartridge that was designed for no apparent purpose other than gun sales". The .204 is fast, loud, and not an improvement on the .22-250 or .220 Swift.
The concept of the Hornet is not to be super fast or powerful - but to be just enough with no waste. Maybe this concept is alien to guys these days - and that is a great loss. There is no "Modern Hornet" - I just wish there was.

The K Hornet is still a thin case with a rim. It is faster than a standard Hornet using maybe 9 grains of 296 but it is hardly a modern development. Since the triple deuce came out the K has been obsolete for all practical purposes. Glad you like it but it is not for me.

All you have to do is fireform factory hornet ammo in a K hornet chamber and you have a "modern" hornet. You'll then enjoy longer case life, up to 200fps more (depending on load), usually better accuracy overall, much less finicky about loads, easier extraction. Every hornet I have I've rechambered to K hornet. I remember trying to work up an gilt edged accurate load would drive me crazy with the regular hornet. The K hornet is MUCH easier to work up a load for. Check the K hornet out.
