Do I need a new caliber?
I am using a .270 but I am beggining to wonder if there is a better caliber for me. I Hunt a very steep area of land with many ridges and hollows. I will not have a shot over 150 yards most shots are 50-75 yards. I hunt deer and coyote. Is the .270 a good gun for this kind of hunting or should I look into a diffrent cartridge?

all guns are capable of killing..270 seems fine

If you're comfortable with the gun & you shoot it well stick with it.
|
270 is more that capable of doing what you have in mind! Jack O'Conner took alot of game in his time with one.My dad has no problem with the idea of elk with a 270,so with deer your in great shape.

Nope. Use the 100 grain bullets for coyotes, 130 or heavier for deer. You got the perfect rifle for both.

It's not the cartridge but rather the rifle that it is chambered in.
If you are hunting in thick terrain you want a short, quick handling rifle that can be maneuvered through trees and brush easily. The cartridge matters not. If your rifle has a long barrel, is overly heavy and bulky, and has a big high power scope I would say it would be a handicap in that setting regardless of what cartridge it is chambered for. |
Like Bigbulls said, if the rifle is not set up for the terrain that you are hunting then it can put you at a handicap. I hunt area like you describe and usually end up carrying my lever gun by midway point. Basically when the weather gets cold and things get less than ideal for a scope, the lever gun comes out and I go for the gun that packs the easiest.

Doesn't sound broken to me.

270 is just fine but why limit yourself to one rifle. Everyone needs a 30-30 in the back of the truck. Its a good short range brush gun up to about 150 yrds and easy to pack and fun as heck to shoot. If you don't own one now, you will. :poke:

.270 That's how the phrase "mountain rifle" got started.
No need for another cartridge........................or other's opinions ! (including mine !!!) |
