Good recoil pad and a muzzle brake is the only way you're going to mimic a 270. I don't even know about loading down. You're still shooting 150 grain or heavier bullets and at 30-06 velocities or more. Probably only be able to get it down to 30-06 recoil levels by loading down alone.
One other thing - how does the stock fit you? That could be a big factor. I have a 300 Weatherby Magnum. Notorious as a heavy kicker. It fits me well and the recoil is not that bad. I can feel it pushing hard, but it doesn't hurt like some guns can. The comb on the stock is a big one. If it hits you in the cheek, it can really smart. Enough of those shots and you'll be talking and looking like Rocky Balboa
The new recoil pad helped a lot, too. I got the Kick-EEZ. I love it.

make sure to check out the video and also make sure they have the EXACT stock for your model .... or you may have to do a little modifying to make it work. sappose to be a great stock.

Ultra Mag Recoil
Bigbuckiller29, all recoil is perceived....You already have a Limb Saver R3 recoil pad on it. About a soft as you can get. You can start by using a good set of ear muffs along with a good set of ear plugs under the good ear muffs. Then start out with a lighter bullet. If you reload, which I hope you do, your ahead of the game. You can tailor your loads for your training. Start with 150 Gr. bullets and work up from there. Everybody has some aversion to recoil. It's knowing it's going to nudge you and not caring anymore because your used to it. As your tolerance increases you can go heavier bullets and more velocity. You really need to train yourself.
I still remember how I flinched when I first started shooting my 308 in a 700 ADL years ago. It kicked like hell. I talked to some of the experienced shooters, they guided me in the right direction. I have 2 300 RUM, a 7 MM RUM, 375 RUM, 338 WIN MAG, 338 Imperial Mag and a 375 Canadian Mag. Besides the big pinchers I shoot some DGR stuff. I have a 458 WIN Mag, 458 Lott and in process with a 460 beltless Weatherby Mag. You train yourself to perceive the recoil. If you can block out all the severe muzzle blast your 65% there. Hang in there Bunky and conquer the menace, don't let it get the upper hand. When you get to shooting the 300 RUM you'll get to appreciate the extra distance and point blank range it will allow you in a do or die situation. You can bring that trophy home with a grin.

try that powerlevel ammo... which is the equivalent to .300RUM, 300 Win mag, .30-06,
personally I dont see why you'd want to shoot .30-06 levels from a .300RUM though.
you can use a recoil pad, along with a muzzlebrake, if a gun is too much though, get something more manageable.
Unless you're going after elk at long range, so unless youre going after big game at long range, or just big/dangerous game, why a .300rum? especially if its too much gun to shoot accurately, a .270 will kill a deer at 500yds without thinking twice.

my solution would be to trade it and buy a 270. I mean in central kentucky what are you going to use it for? I believe elk and black bear are the biggest game you can hunt in kentucky and they're in the south eastern part of the state if memory serves. Get something you know you can shoot.

I have a 300 Ultra Mag and just shot it yesterday with Power Level 1 150 gr. Remington factory Ammo. I also shot my .280 loaded with 140 gr. reloads. There was no noticeable difference between the two for me. The .280 is a light Remington Mountain Rifle and the 300 UM is a bit heavier but has a synthetic stock, both have R3 pads. So the 300 is a little heavier because of the 26" barrel. The Power Level 1 does reduce recoil to around the .270, .280 & 30-06 range IMO. Give it a try, I think you will like it.
