300 Weatherby Magnum

Just curious. I'm going to the range soon to fire my dad's 300 Weatherby Magnum. I've fired a nice range of guns before at the range but not something as large as a 300. Just wanted to know what kind of recoil to expect. Similar to a 30-06? How much more powerful? Also, what would you hunt with a 300? Personally, I feel that here in North America, a 30-06 and down would be able to handle pretty much any animal, but, that's just me. haha

If both guns were equal, same weight, pad etc...

IMO it's a serious step up in power. That being said, anytime I was worried about kick, it was never that bad.

Once you can handle a .300mag you can shoot anything IMO, though I've yet to shoot a .458lott, but I'm really not worried.

Give it a shot, guns kick, big deal, in the field I wouldn't worry about it, off the bench its always going to be the worst, if it's too much stop, sighting it in would be the worst part of it, after that, a few shots to make sure it's on, and then just when in the field, I think very few guys would take their 300mags out everyweekend and blast alot of rounds to plink targets.

The recoil of your dad's 300 Wby is going to be a good deal stiffer than a .30-06, unless the 300 Wby rifle is a lot heavier. If you spend any real time shooting from a bench, the 300 Wby will not be very comfortable to shoot. Shooting from field positions it will be better, but still not like a .30-06.

As for what you can hunt with a 300 Wby... well, just about anything you want. The 300 Wby is suitable for anything up to moose. For deer I'd be careful about shot placement, staying away from major muscle and bone, because it'll destroy a lot of meat. Hit them through the ribs and the 300 Wby will make a deer quite dead, and won't totally wreck the edible portions.
