Good old 300WM. This is how I see it:

300 Weatherby - PRO - velocity, CON - $$$ factory ammo, ammo availability, brass, recoil

300 RUM - PRO - velocity, CON - Not much choice in brass, recoil

300WM - PRO - Ammo everywhere, versitality in bullets compared to WSM, many brass sources

300WSM - PRO - short action, efficiency, CON - can't optimize heavier bullets without a custom gun

Personally it came down to the WM or WSM. I hate brakes and I shoot a decent amount, so I did not want to put up with the recoil of the larger cartridges. They only give incremental range advantages over the WM anyways, if I need to shoot further I will be forced into getting a brake and would go to a 338 at that point.

I have owned 4 of those on the list. I have settled on the old 300WM. I can achieve 3100fps with 180gr ballistic tip with a 24" barrel which isn't shabby, and I could never achieve that with a WSM. Barrel life is long, and feeds well.

300RUM's I loved. But I did shoot out 2 barrels in two years. Less than 2500 rounds. And everytime I rebarreled a gun, things change. Maybe not as accurate or mabye fouled more. I might own another one. I still keep my dies.

Weatherby's are screamer but I hate the freebore. hate the price of brass.

here is a ballistics chart usin a 300wsm and a 300winmag..comparin apples to apples...and nothin here is showin me that a 300 win mag out performs a wsm...unless 50fps is substantial to you....looks to be that at 500 yards that the wsm starts to shine...the 3 top ones are wsm and the 3 bottoms are win mag..and i chose the same bullets avalible fer each gun as to compare..i can find many cartridges that do better than what these charts say fer my 300wsm as well as you can fer your win mag..but apples to apples the winmag and short mag are vertually the same, til ya hit 500 yards and its just as mi-nute as befor 500 yards.. maybe your 24" barrel is all ya have ..im sure there is 1 avalible sumhow, sumway in 300wsm..

after further reveiw looks like 300 win mag only has the lead with velocity under 500 yards...energy and short range and long range trajectory go to the WSM..thx fer bringin this up

I have a 300winmag and 300wsm. I like the win mag better, both are awesome. Got mine in a t3 and rem 700. Never selling either one!

I don't mean this in an offensive way, but do you know anything about shooting and bullistic coef, velocity, etc?

I wouldn't know I don't shoot factory ammo. I have made my own many years as most on here do. I had a WSM in a 26" barrel and still could not achieve 3100fps without serious pressure signs. Longer barrel results in greater velocity. I could easily get another 30fps with a 26" barrel. I myself would rather have a shorter 24" barrel for hunting.

Its fairly known that WSM was hyped with increase of pressure from SAAMI specs. Don't believe advertising hype. Do the tests yourself.

Little tip for yourself. If both guns are shooting same bullet, then there is no way it shines as you say. A bullet has a bullistic coef, and if both are coming out of the barrel same velocity, there is no "shining" as you say.

I am not sure what your trying to say. I am only saying from a handloaders point of view, you can and should be able to beat a WSM and then some.

I have owned quite a few of them, and I chose the win mag.

Shoot what you want.

.300 Win. Mag., at the time there was no .300RUM or .300WSM, there was the .300wby though.

It is a known fact that factory 300WM is loaded soft compared to what any competent handloader can achive. Conversely, the WSM is loaded a lot hotter to better market it.

So sure, if you're going to use factory ammo only there is not really a difference, but the question was about the cartridge and not factory ammo.

You are also correct, with 150gr bullets there is not going to be much of a difference because you can still load the WSM way out and fit it in the mag. But with 180 and 200 gr bullets, the kind a 300 mag is made to shoot and are typically used at longer ranges, you simply cannot load them in a WSM without reducing your powder capacity unless you have a chamber throated to do this and an aftermarket mag (or long action) to fit shells loaded past SAAMI specs.

So with 180-200+ gr bullets, you simply cannot get as much out of the WSM as you can the WM. You can come close in a custom gun, but in a factory rifle there will be a significant performance difference.

Now if we were talking about the equivalent 7mm rounds, the WSM gives up nothing on its long action cousin. But you pay a price in these short rounds when you move up in caliber.
