is a rilfed barrel worth the money

Hey guys i have a mossberg 500. I have been thinking about switching to a 500 slugster rifled barrel. walmart has the kit for like 250 i think for the wood 500 with a smooth bore and the rifled barrel. is it worth spending the money for the rifled barrel. I figured since i can have the whole gun for like 100 more then a barrel i will just go that way. But is the improvements worth the money. Also what would the max distance be with the 24 rifled barrel and the 28 inch smoothbore? Also what scope works good on the 500? Also what ammo should i use in the rifled barrel

They ain't all hateful. They have always been a cheep gun, but IMO, are dependable. I've kilt well over 20 deer w/the factory slugger. Paper punch 2" to 3" at 100 yd. are normal. Win. Super X 3".

Rifled shotgun barrels give you the ability to use sabot slugs. They aren't cheap but they will beat the crap out of a rifled slug in a smoothbore :D Depending on accuracy, the new hornady SST slugs would be awesome for a slug gun. I use the same bullets in my muzzleloader.

Buy yourself the rifled/cantilever barrel or like you said the whole gun with the rifled/cantilever barrel, you will get much better performance versus the smoothbore barrel. Mossberg is a proven shotgun and a proven company.

Look into a decent scope, for the money the BUSHNELL TROPHLY scope in 3-9x40 is very good for this set-up.

Shotguns are very iffy with slugs, 2 of the same model/brand may like different slugs, try different brands of saboted slugs, but seems like the LIGHTFIELDS work great most of the time

Just buy a muzzleloader. It's an excuse to accumulate another gun.
