Which Remington 700 should I get?
 

I've talked myself into getting a new (or used) rifle in .308. Never had a .308.
I'm willing to "spoil" myself and get it a Remington 700. I hjad no idea they made so many different models!. Round, heavy, triangle, fluted, barrels galore!
My needs: I hunt the Rockies for Antelope to Elk (someday Moose!). So I need long range accuracy (a tack driver), not too concerned with weight for lugging up & down mountains, synthetis is probably prefered for it's all weather reliability. Will mount scope so no sigghts. Stainless not a necessity.

Maybe there's a better choice than the 700 or Rem?

I have the Mountain LSS and I like it alot! Accuracy is about 1" and its very light and easy to carry. Its also a real good looking rifle IMO. I paid around 800$ I think. Its doesnt come in 308 though ,It does come in 30-06 and 270 which would probably be more appropriate for the game you mentioned

I would go with the Remington Model 7 in 308. Same action as the 700 just a 20" barrell.. I know my 243 is a tack driver, and the shorter barrell sure makes it nice for lugging around.

How about a CDL SF if you have to have a .308?

If he goes 7mm-08 (which I would also over the .308), I would take a hard look at the Mountain LSS too. I'm sure they're both adequate but I wonder if either the 7mm-08 or .308 are the best caliber for the type of hunting the OP describes?

I have "more prefered" calibers. I just have always wanted a .308. It's not really about the caliber . . . but about the variety of features all the 700's offer.
I love the way the Mountain rifle looks, but I'd read that the Mountain barrel is very slim (to reduce weight) and therefore prone to larger groups because the barrel doesn't efficiently cool between shots.

As long as I let the barrel cool 5 minutes after the 2nd shot, my 7-08 mountain LSS does an inch ,and often less, all day long. My load is a 154gr hornady over 48gr h4350. I think the LSS in 06, would be about the most perfect high country (factory) big game rifle out there. I also dont see any ballistic advantage ,or nostalgic appeal the 308 has over the 06, but to each his own.

Over the years Iv'e owned 3 700 ADL's in 06, a BDL in .300 Win mag and the most recent, an LSS in .300 WSM. Every one of them was accurate, decent trigger, totally dependable and very sharp looking. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a 700.
