There is no better cartridge for antelope and deer. I have a Remington 700 ADL made over 30yrs ago chambered in 25-06. Love that thing, shoots very nicely, super accurate. The problem will be ammo availability. I handload all of my ammunition so this isn't a problem (and for my friends who shoot this wonderful cartridge as well), but for factory shooters you might not have the easiest time going down to wal mart and getting your favorite box of shells.

Yeah no SH*T.

Wal-mart just limited us to 2 boxes of ammo a day here in Perry,Ok and Stillwaterr. I'll prolly go to basspro or sportsmanswharehouse...

You can get yourself into reloading pretty easy. The equipment will pay for itself quickly as you can handload for half or a third the price of factory.

get a .270 or .243 instead.

I'm quite certain a .270 w/ 130gr is just as flat or flatter as a .25-06 with 100-115gr.

.270 more popular too.

what calibers do you already own? as I primary gun I think I'd look to more of a do it all round, but as a specialty round I'd consider it. Seems liek alot of guys prefer the 100gr loads in it though, so then I ask, why not shoot a 6mm/243 etc...?

The 25-06 is too big for the little stuff, and to small for the big stuff. It is an acceptable cartridge for deer hunting. But it is by no means a nominal deer cartridge.

The cartridge has too much recoil to be a day in day out varminter. And if you are looking for something for long range shooting then the 6.5 mm cartridge is a better choice over the 25 caliber.

I get flamed a good bit because I am not a quarter bore fan. And I have owned several of them. Including the 257 Wby. For me it just never had the proper mix of bullet, BC, velocity, and energy. There are way too many other choices out there, that are better choices.

I also do not like the fact that you are shooting a miniscule cartridge that still requires a long action??

And if recoil is an issue. Well then you are stuck in the middle again.

Also the ammo prices are ridiculous. Especially when you can buy 270 cartridges for less money. And the 25-06 is definitely no 270.

And to keep pouring it on. If you are a hand loader, there are less bullet choices in the 25 caliber. Adequate, yes. But not nominal(again). Tom.

Have 2 25 06's and both are great shooters. Like anything else, different people like different calibers, and I happen to like most of them.

I never used a 25-06 but I have no doubt its a nice cartridge. Been using a .243 for years .
But recently I got into reloading and it opened up a new world.
I just bought a 7-08.
crunch the numbers with the 7-08 using 120 gr nosler BT @ 3150-3200 fps.
That makes it flatter than the 25 with 115's and flatter than the .270 with 130's
