Most likely, yes. Rifles with really light barrels like the Mtn. rifle tend to be more difficult to shoot accurately than rifles with more weight out front. They're good for carrying but not so great for shooting. I've tried the super light rifles and the heavy barreled rifles and have decided that something in the middle is best for 99% of all hunting.

IT'S ALL PERSONAL PEREFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO HUNTING RIFLES. BUT IN MY CASE THE HEAVIER RIFLES DO THE TRICK.

I find I shoot better with heavier rifles so all of my rifles weigh around nine pounds with scope.

Here's a few things that might help. A tall Harris Bipod for use in the sitting position and a adjustable trigger. If you see game at 300yds you should have time to deploy a bipod. Another aide is a good military style leather sling set up as an arm cuff support sling but accuracy may be affected due to the thin forend and barrel of your rifle.

Like Ed said a bipod or a shooting fork will help a lot. Your not going to be shooting at running animals so take a good rest if you can at that range .

At 300 yards, a bi- or tri-pod would be a BIG help. I don't like to use them at closer ranges (bad for the ego), but at 300yds I'll take any help I can get.

Short of that, a heavier gun usually helps and a shooter's sling will help as well.

I would consider having your trigger polished and making it break at about 3 3/4 lbs. and then look at getting a set of the shooting sticks. You can make a holster for them and they are really lightweight. You will have time to use them for a longer shot but you won't have to carry the heavy bipods on the gun all day if you don't need them. Also a slightly firm hasty sling is effective at helping steady you.
