Savage or Remington??
ok so i work at an outdoors store but have always been the fishing type guy and when it comes to hunting i love it but i only go bird hunting. I want to get into big game hunting but i need some advice on a rifle. Ive got 2 in my eyes that are cheaper for a starting rifle but havent heard alot about them. My first choice is a Savage Model 110 that comes with a scope(cheap bushnell) and i can choose either .270 or a 30-06. The second choice is a Remington Model 770 with the same scope(cheap bushnell) which i can also choose a number of calibres in. If anyone has something to say about these package rifles, ex. which is a better model, good calibre to get it in, etc. then please share... much appreciated.

Not a huge fan of Savage but would get it over a Rem 770. You can get after market stuff if you desire for the Savage while your pretty much stuck with the 770 the way it is.
|
Since you said that you want to get into "big game hunting", then IMO of the rifles you listed you should get the Savage M110 in .30-06.
The factory scope is lousy and you should replace it as soon as you can with a higher quality scope such as a Nikon with BDC or a Burris in the 4-14x range...Savage rifles tend to be extremely accurate "out of the box"... |
I would go for the Savage in .270.
|
+1 on the Savage (with a better scope). -1 on the Remmy 770.

A good friend of mine shoots a Savage 110 in .270 and loves it. It was very accurate out of the box, and with the handload we've worked up for it shoots less than a half inch at 100 yards. Factory ammo was shooting right around 1" at 100. It shoots flawlessly, and the action cycles very nicely.
I have a Remington 710 in .243 that was my first rifle. I believe the new(er) 770 is very similar to the old(er) 710, and I HATE the action on that rifle. My 13 year old brother shoots the 243 and loves it, but I can't stand the action, that's my only complaint. |
Savage in 06 or 270 cant go wrong.
|
308 wouldnt be bad either.....
|
+ 1 for Savage (with better scope).
If only one gun for big game get the .30-06. |
Yeah i was leaning towards the Savage... im mostly going to be hunting deer but ill have some weekend trips for moose as well... i live in the good ol' canadian shield so thats the majority of what we hunt except bear but im not big on hunting them... the only thing im not sure on is calibre... ive got a tie between .270 30-06 or .308 but im thinking .270...accurate, fast and still big enough to take down a moose
|
If Moose is also a probability, I'd go the 06....in the Savage! Better choice of bullet weights and you can find ammo anywhere!
Just my ancient opinion. Dan |
Savage, 270 or 30-06

Another vote for the Savage. I don't get why anyone would even consider the Remington 770. There are much better rifles for the same price or cheaper. That Savage being one of them. The other one I'd consider is the Marlin XL7. However, those Savages are really nice. A friend got one last year in .243 and loves it.
|
I'm no expert, but the 770 gets more harsh criticism and complaints as any firearm on the discussion boards. Every rifle ever made has its critics, but it seems inordinate with the 770.
|
without a doubt the savage. I have the 110 package and it's my most accurate rifle. Even with the cheap simmons scope (that i will replace eventually) it's a great gun.
you could also look at Marlin XL7. Just got me one of these and it's a fantastic gun for the price. Got the gun for $289, put a Nikon prostaff scope with rings and it came in around $450. Very close to the package prices being offered today. |
Savage! 30-06 will get you set for antelope, deer and elk
|
I wouldn't take a 770 if it was given to me and I'm a big 700 fan. Remington really dropped the ball on that rifle.
|
i have the savage 111 in 7mm rem mag and love it shoots well accurate and comes factory with a full floted barrel. i wouldnt trade it for anything (except a weatherby)
|
If I had to choose between a Savage and a Rem 770, I'd stay home!
Look for used quality gun such as a Rem 700 or a push feed Winchester M-70.....you'll be way ahead of the game. |
there is a reason why the 30-06 is the cartridge by which all others are measured. i've killed moose with a 270 win, but i prefer the 30-06.

Just out of curiousity, Iv'e owned at least four Remington 700's and at least three different Remington .22's, all of them outstanding shooters and very accurate. In short, nothing but respect for the Remingtons. What is it about the 770 that has earned it so much bad press? Never had one so I have no idea. What about them was wrong? I had a used Savage in .223 for awhile and it wasn't much to look at, but it was very accurate, also, very heavy with out a bull barrel. It would not however, out shoot the 700's, so why so much favoritism for the Savages? Are they really that much better?----------

Jhilde,
The 770 is a 710 with better makeup :D There are lots of bad reviews on them, but it's another way to get the guy who wants something cheap. Savages and stevens are well known for accuracy, just like the Remington 700. Sometimes either of these can be bad shooters...just none of the ones I've shot from either maker :D So basically, Savages simply shoot great, and the 770s have too many corners cut to be called a quality rifle. |
Go for the Savage in 30-06. I wouldn't take a 710 or 770 even if it were given to me. They are junk, for the same price you can buy better quality rifles like the Savage, Marlin or Mossberg. For just a little more a Howa or Weatherby Vanguard. I'm not a big Remington fan due to many quality control issues over the last 10 years. I will say that the 700 ADL in 257 Roberts that I had for a while was a tack driver for a no frills gun.
|
My choice would be the Remington.
|
You can't go wrong with the savage, I have 5 of them they all shoot great. The gun is very under rated for the money.
|
i purchased a savage 110 243 youth model rifle for my 10yr ol daughter & that sum-beach out shot my rem 700 ls 270 & my 700 sps 708
so i went out & got myself a savage 114 7mag & sold both my remmys |
As I said, Iv'e had a number of good Remingtons, a couple of them outstanding, but at present, my new 30-06 is a CZ American with the full length stock topped with a Burris Fullfield ll and it's definately a shooter. I just bought a CZ .22 also, so I guess there is life after Remington. Just feels strange because up until now, Iv'e always had a 700 in 06 and usually in a varmint caliber or a .300 also. But Iv'e talked to a lot of people and read a lot of reviews and really wanted the Mannlicher stock so went with the CZ's. I have heard, however, that the Savages are almost always accurate and dependable. From what the forum is saying, it sounds like the Savage would be the way to go. I'd suggest the CZ line, but they are a little pricey. I'll second going with the Savage----------

gun
cooper.hands down.......the other two are not even close.....:lolabove:

i bought a 110 in .270 last week and took it to the range 3 days ago , to see how "out of the box" accurate it was , i don't have my camera with me atm , but i would show you a 3-shot group just a hair over 1/2" @ 100yrds , and this is out of the box... my old Remington 710 couldn't even come close to it...
that and i absolutely love the accu-trigger savage has.... and this one actually came with a Bushnell scope not the Simmons , not sure if they made a running change in that line-up or not... |
Savage in 30-06. The scope will be fine for the first year but I'd replace it in the off season.
How about a Weatherby Vanguard? Better built than both of the models you listed, plenty accurate and around $400 new. |
