Best round for 30-06

I' m a back-asswards hunter - started with a bow, and finally just got my first gun. (Rem 700 BDL SS 30-06 which I LOVE) :D:D I' m hunting mostly mulies, bear & elk. All of my shots to date have been under 60 yards, but I' d like to be able to shoot out to 300... For the range and deer, I just shoot Win. Super X 180 Power Points, but was thinking 180 Nosler Partitions for elk & bear.

What do you think would be the optimum load for them???

180 gr. Nosler Partitions will do the job for you. Good luck.

165 gr. bullets will retain more energy and have a better trajectory than 180 gr at longer distances.

I think it' s a toss up between 180 and 165 Grainers. However, I' d far rather shoot Swift' s A-Frame or the Trophy Bonded bullets. The Noslers have a habit of shedding the front lead in their partition and it never happens with the bonded bullets. Further I consistantly get better accuracy with A-Frames.

we hunt whitetails and me and my dad both use the 30-06...he uses nosler balistic tips and i like a good hollowpoint like sierra game king hpbt....we both use 165gr bullets....they do thier job pretty well.....ive never had a problem with either....

Mauser-06, I totally agree with you.....however I don' t consider deer to be " big game" .....they' re " big varmints" at the best.

It don' t take a .30-06 to adequately harvest a whitetail.....it don' t take anything remotely as powerful as that or anything as hi-teck as a Swift A-Frame.

The game changes when the game starts to get bigger and more expensive.

I can go deer hunting for a lot less than $50......elk hunting is a helluva lot more than that.....I' d vote for power and bonded bullets for that hunt. The old ' 06 is as good as ever in that respect.

MT^Boy-----I' ve used an 06 for years. Your current bullet is one I' ve used for black bears & elk here in Colorado. A 180 grain bullet is my choice & I' ve never had a problem on elk, mule deer, bear. I' ve used the standard Winchester PP or Remington " Core-Lokt" . I' ve drawn a sheep & goat tag a couple years ago----I handloaded a 180 Grain " Hornady Spire Point" for them, I' ve also used that bullet on elk with success. I will probably go back to factory loads when I' ve used up this last batch of handloads. IMO, if your rifle like the 180 grain Winchester PP---then use it---it will handle both black bear & elk. Good Luck & Good Hunting !

Thanks boys!! Let the experiements begin...:D

I' d like to use a premium bullet for bear and elk, because around here, sometimes, you need to anchor them where they stand....

Will a Nosler shoot through the shoulders adequately?
