My new gun

Got my new gun in yesterday.
A Weatherby Vangaurd in 7mm-08
I put an Axiom stock on it, with leupold bases and rings and a Mueller 4x16x50 with red dot.
I hope to try some long range shooting, long range for me is 400 yds.
I will load some Nosler 120 gr around 3200 fps, I hope it shoots well.

Carpmaster 10-02-2009 06:54 AM

You sound like youve been drinking a little too much of the hateorade, keep quite while men are talking.

Steve863 10-02-2009 11:21 AM

Nice gun, caliber and scope. I wouldn't give a cent for the stock, however. This para-military look has absolutely no appeal to me.

Pawildman 10-02-2009 11:32 AM

.......Hey zrex.... I've never seen anything quite like that. Is there a pressure point at the front of the stock the barrel contacts, or is it free-floated the whole length? Did you shoot it with the factory stock before you put the new one on to get a comparison? Just curious......

Ya its completely floated, I havent shot it at all. I wanted to shoot it with the factory stock but couldnt resist putting it together first.

ya I here you, its an aquired taste.
I have had them all through the years. glossy walnut, laminated, thumbholes, synthetic. I am into the military look now. I like the tactical stuff nowdays. Plus most aftermarket composites are aluminum pillar bedded as this one is. Just bolt them up, they are direct fit, no floating or bedding there done already.

Nice rifle, zrex...

Just curious though... As we've both recently acquired 7mm-08's, who's left in charge of defending the .243 as a deer cartridge around here?:party0005:

hehehe

I dunno, theres still a bunch on here shooting it.

Got to shoot it yesterday, was doing the barrel break in procedures and it shows great potential, even after cleaning my shots were still grouping.
I can tell its going to be a shooter cause I never chased my bullet around.
first shot off a bore sight I hit 8 low and 4 right, made adjustments and I was 1" dead center high on the second shot. 25 shots and all that cleaning I knocked the x out about 8 times. I didnt really do any group shots as I was there just to burn rounds and break in the barrell.
2 different loads and two different weights it shot them both great, I had a few one holers. It easily did 1 1/2" groups even after cleaning. Right before i left I let one fly at 200 yds 1 1/2" to the right, made adjustment and knocked the x out on the second shot. and when I say X I mean that little x dead center of the bull.
I need to go back and keep burning some rounds to break it in.

How many rounds do guys you think it takes before I can say its broke in. 100 ?

I did 2 shots patched it with copper solvent then brushed with copper solvent then patched it with hoppes then dry patches then oil then dry patch. This is what my cleaning consisted of.
I did 2 shots then cleaned for 10 rounds then did it after every 3 shots.
One thing I found out I dont like is the rear stock, it doesnt sit on a bag very good

RLoving1 10-05-2009 07:25 AM

I would like to have a 7mm-08 but will stick with the 243 myself since I got a couple.Wanted to ask you who took a jig saw and cut chunks outa you new rifle?:poke: Why didn't you go with the leupy scope with the bases on this one? You know your gonna make the Hornet jealous! My nephew took my son's Ruger varmint243 to Colorado a few weeks ago and he was works on prarie dogs out to 400 consistantly and got one out at 480 one time, gotta love hand loads!:barmy:

zrexpilot 10-05-2009 07:38 AM

This is my third mueller, I like them, they come with the red dot which I like for night hunting.
My new 7-08 will have to get a lot of kills befor the Hornet gets jealous.

update on pic here it is with the new cheek piece installed

Centaur 1 10-05-2009 03:36 PM

Mario that's one sweet looking rig. By the sounds of it I wouldn't worry about breaking it in, it seems to be shooting good already. Unless you're shooting against Boots Obermeyer I think that too many people put too much emphasis on breaking in a barrel. As far as using the Mueller, I wish more hni members would give them a try. They're the best kept secret out there. This one looks even better than the APV that I have on my 17hmr. The reticle is pretty unique looking and I like the 1/8" adjustments. For those that are interested here's the link to the scope you bought.

He didnt tell you he wasnt going to die after being shot with the .243 because it wasnt a 30-06 and then trotted off.

Z you have your bases on backwards. Your setup would be stronger if you have your rings farter apart. You have a little less adjustment for eye relief, however the strength is much more important. You might als o have some drag on your cases after you shoot. The bases are extending into the action. Tom.:happy0001:

zrexpilot 10-05-2009 05:24 PM

It wouldnt fit any other way, If I turn the rear base around it hits on the bolt plus the scope wouldnt fit in between. If I spin the front one around same thing scope doesnt fit in between. I could get a different front base but it will pull the scope a little forward and I dont think I want it any more forward.

Plus I think its pretty strong, when I was at the range the gun rolled off my rest and bag as its pictured here, rolled right off on the table pretty hard, it was still dead on and it didnt hurt or mark or scratch anything, whew !

HEAD0001 10-05-2009 05:35 PM

I looked at the picture again and I see what you mean about the back base hitting the bolt if you turn it around. The more I look at it the more I like the Picatinney rails I have went to on all my rifles. The rails are easier to install and put less torque on the scopes, while they are consideraly stronger. Maybe you could trade someone for a different set of bases---I do not know. However I am pretty sure that those rings are far too close together. And that definitley puts undue strain on the scope. Especially with such a heavy scope. Good luck and good shooting with whatever you decide. Tom.

zrexpilot 10-05-2009 05:46 PM

ya I think the raill would be better and was actually thinking about going that way. A friend praised leupold rings and to tell you the truth I think theyre junk. I dont like the way the front twists on and very hard to get square, the rear is held by a small pinch in between those to screws , not very good in my opinion. The rear has windage adjustment coupled with the front spinning around, these were the hardest rings and bases to install and get all squared up and trued down the barrell. I wont buy these ever again. I thinkg the picanny rail would add to the tactial look of this rifle, do you have enough room to load shells or does it hinder it some.

HAHAHA!!!!He hit da ground after i shot him with that 243!!!!Could not have killed him faster with a 300 mag.

DeerandbearhoG 10-05-2009 05:59 PM

I agree, I hate turn in mounts w/ adjustable rear windage. I put dual dovetail mounts on my 700 7-08, and my savage muzzleloader. I used the wheeler scope ring alignment too,l and lapped the rings. Rock solid, accurate and very clean looking.

HEAD0001 10-05-2009 06:10 PM

Below is a couple of picture of rifles with Picatinney rails. The rail in no way impedes the shells. And notice how much farther apart the rings are. That makes the mount considerably stronger. And because both rings are monunted on the same rail it takes the "torque" out of the scope. Look at the true tactical rifles. They all wear Picatinney's. Tom.

The picatinny rails are definitely the way to go. The slots are wider than the Weaver bases so they use a larger diameter screw to clamp the rings to the base.

Pawildman 10-06-2009 06:33 AM

..........Hey Tom....Hate to tell you this, but the bolt is on the wrong side of the action.....

zrexpilot 10-07-2009 08:41 PM

Did some more shooting today.
I am impressed.
3 shot groups at 200 yds were in the 3/4" range, 5 shots were at 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 range
5 different loads, 3 shot great. the worst was 3" at 200yds
several one holers
burned 40 rounds. Didnt even shoot 100 yds

triggertadpole 10-08-2009 06:42 PM

i like that gun

Z said he cant stand that setup he also said that after watching his gun rollover it shot perfectly fine,im the friend that praises that setup & just ask him what kind of groups this entire setup is holding at 200yrds. ur welcome z
