11-87 slug ?
Bare with me.Got a rifled slug barrel for my 11-87.Already had a scope on it and was accurate.New barrel threw it off some but not much.Regular slugs flew very inconsistent, all 2 3/4",tried 2 3/4" sabots, got it very close to being dead on at 25 yards, went to 50 they were a bit low.At this point I had run out of 2 3/4" sabots(only had a box of 5) so tried 3" sabot slugs. They were all low, like 4-6 inches lower than the 2 3/4" sabots at 50 yards.I will be getting some more 2 3/4 sabots and heading to the range next week.?,are the 3" slugs physically larger or do they just have more powder? Is there a better and easier way to get this thing sighted in?

IMO you do not need magnum slugs for deer hunting...any of the top end 2 3/4" slugs will work...remember that foster type slugs will be very eratic out of a rifled barrel...
I shoot a Remington 1100 with a fully rifled barrel and have had great results from Hornady's 385grain SSTs (which are hot!)...accuracy is good out beyond 100 yards...but would limit shots to 200 yards... Winchester's Partition Gold / Platinum Tips and Remington Solid Copper slugs should all work good as well... |
I have the 11-87 with a rifled/cantilever barrel. When I first got this shotgun I sighted in with Lightfields, then a few years ago I was going out to Illinois and wanted a much lighter slug and went with the Winchester Suprems Golds (385gr) with decent results, but I just went back to Lightfields EXPs (blue shell) 2-3/4". Sight in to be 2.5" high at 50 yards, turn your scope up to the highest level when you sight in.
Best of luck |
I have a Hastings rifled barrel on my Browning A5 and all I shoot is Winchester BRI sabots........

Problem.I live in MA and there is no way I could even see a deer at 200 yards unless I was on a farm, and even then a 200 yard shot wouldnt be a very good shot(for me).I was shooting all remington ammo.Does anyone know what the difference form a 2 3/4 to a 3" slug is?BTW thanks for the help.

I'm in NJ and hunt deep woods, so my shots are under 100 yards with most within 75 yards. Stay with 2-3/4" slugs and try the Lightfield EXPs (white box, blue shells) the only thing you gain with a 3" shell is added recoil

You will have to check the box for the slug weight, but usually the only difference in a 3" mag slug is more powder, more recoil. In my experience, the slug barrels commonly available from the big firearm manufacturers usually shoot the cheaper, and a bit lower velocity sabots better than the high velocity sabots. This has to do with the twist rate in most factory barrels not being optimal for the higher velocity sabots. I would try the cheaper Federal or Winchester slugs first. Then if the results are not what you want, you can move up to others. The Lightfields also have a good reputation.

3" slugs give you either a heavier slug, more velocity, or both. And always substantially more recoil.
Unless you are hunting bear, 12-gauge slugs are already overkill for deer and there is no rational reason to use 3" slugs unless you are trying to squeeze an extra 30-40 yds of useful range at long distances. I have never hunted with a 3" shell. Fire 2 shots at 50 yds. If they are close to each other, and assuming your scope is 1/4" at 100yd clicks, measure the distance you are low from your aiming point in inches (to the center of the group). Multiply the number of inches by 8, then add 16. Go up this number of clicks. This should put you 2 inches high at 50 yds. You should be able to now fire your 3rd shell at 100 yds. Measure inches from desired POI, multiple by 4, and move that many clicks in the desired direction. Fire your last 2 shells and they should be about where you want them. You have now roughly sighted in with a single box. |
Thanks guys I will try some of the above ideas and will get back with the results in about a week when I got back to the range.

OK within 5 shots she was sighted in.I decided to go with the remington 2 3/4 sabot accutip slugs(they got great reviews).First shot a breneke 2 3/4 she was about 4" low but windage was correct,3" remington was dead on,2 3/4 accutip was 5" low, made adjustments next 2 accutips were dead on at 50(I dont need anything farther than 100 yards so if the deer is that far out I will just aim a bit higher.Accutips flew great so hopefully they will be used for real in a couple months. Thanks for everyones help.
