Though I haven't killed an elk with a 243 I believe that when using a good bonded bullet in 100gr and up it will kill an elk just as quick as a 7 mag when shot broadside to quartering away in the heart lung area. It doesn't possess the range of the 7 mag but it can do the job within its own limitations.

jpschooter - Let's go with quartering away, but it would be great to hear how that would have affected your vote anyway.

I think that the 243 is totally inadequate on anything bigger than a ground squirrel past 50 yards and the 7mm Rem Mag is gross overkill under 500 yards unless you're shooting at charging elephants or attack helicopters. I also think that if you hunt with a 243 you're an unethical slob hunter who's was unloved as a child, and if you use a 7mm Mag, you're an unskilled slob hunter that's trying to compensate for a small wiener.

didnt mean that to be nasty, i own both calibers in question and have shot new england whitetail with both as well as elk and mule deer with the seven mm. shoot a good bullet and make a good shot it wont matter within the given parameters. furthermore i can drive tacks with the 243 so when available i take a head shot with it and ther is absolutely no hesitation theyre dead, pretty unethical sounding to me. As for 7mm being over kill i dont think there is such a thing, what makes it overkill, damage to the animal? once again SHOT PLACEMENT, if you cant make an ""ethical"" shot then you need practice not a different caliber rifle

Quartering away, with the right bullet, the .243 is capable of taking any of the game listed. On a quartering to shot, I would imagine that you'd be more likely to get deflection off the shoulder bones of the elk and moose, although I'm not speaking from experience on that... Personally, I'd carry the .243 for anything up to the size of a mule deer. For elk or moose, I'd use my 7mm Rem Mag, my .30-06, or my 7mm-08.

Boy, and here I thought that the blatant and heavy use of hyperbole would have made it somewhat obvious that I was kidding... without flat out stating that I was kidding...

A discussion about the ethics of headshots is a whole separate discussion. I will, however, say that I would be strongly against attempting one under all but the most ideal circumstances, and say that I'd consider most attempts to make a headshot unethical. What if you hit the snout and/or blow the jaw off? Slow, painful death from dehydration/infection.

I have shot whitetails with the 243, and it really didn't impress me much.Great for the gophers and yotes though. I don't have any hands on experience with the 7 mm, but have lots of friends that use, or have used them. Also have a bud that sold his 7 mm mag for a 25 06, which he uses for moose, elk and whatever else that he is after. He totally lost faith in the 7mm after a bullet failure on an elk. I turned him on to the 25 06, and he has never looked back. Given the right circumstances, a 22 rimfire will kill a deer or moose, but with better options available, wouldn't be the tool of choice.
