10/22 barrel changout

Thought about changing my barrel out on my 10/22. It shoots ok now, with about 2.5" groups at 50 yards. Stingers shoot the best out of it. Tried all the match ammo, like eley, subsonics, green tag, federal gold, and it doesn' t seem to like this type of ammo. Talked with a guy at the range, and he said I really don' t have the chamber for it. He has two 10/22, one with the Fajen stock and carbon fiber barrel and another with that butler creek kit that cabelas sell with the heavy barrel and stock. Both shoot very well but he has to clean out the chamber every 15 rounds or he said he won' t be able to get the brass out. He said he changed out the extractor to a titanium one, but still doesn' t help. Do you guys have to do this?

I reworked my 10/22 with an Adams & Bennett heavy match barrel and a Fajen thumbhole stock. Dropped in a Power custom hammer and sear and threw on a scope. It appears to shoot well with all the ammo I have tried so far and I have no extraction problems.

I have a butler creek heavy fluted barrel and stock on my 10/22 and a volquartson hammer and trigger spring.Groups are 1/2" at 50 yards with remington target ammo and I only clean the gun every 500 rounds or so.

I guess that guy was full of bolonia. He said his chamber is so tight he has to clean out the chamber every 15 rounds. I thought that was crazy.

2.5" groups at 50 yds ? That' s terrible ! I have a stock 10-22 stainless Sporter that groups .5" @ 50 yds right out of the box . Is there a problem with your barrel or action ? I' ve gone through up to 12 mags without problems using Federal Gold ammo , and had no extraction problems . By the way , Ruger reccomends against Stinger ammo in the 10-22 , probably a case length issue . Take it to a gunsmith to have it checked , you may have a defective rifle . Chamber too tight ? Sounds like bs to me . He must be shooting loads with too little headspace . He should be made aware that this can be dangerous if that is the case .

RE: 10/22 barrel changout

The match ammo such as eley, federal gold, remington-eley, wolf, rws, and some others have a relativly thick coating of wax or grease on the bullet. This works fine in single shots like Anshutz because the cartridge if fed directly into the chamber at a more or less straight angle. With an autloader it goes in at an angle so the wax/grease will rub off in the chamber. After a number of shots this will build up and cause the empties to get stuck in the chamber. That is why he needs to clean it out. Hope this helps
