advice on new gun
After trying to get my H&R single 7-08 barrell to shoot with no luck I sold it.
I am going to buy another 7-08 and the reason I am choosing it over a 243 is because I handload and can get the 7 to shoot 120's faster and flatter than any 100 gr .243 handload and I like that. Plus I already bought a bunch of stuff to reload the 7-08. Plus I have used a .243 for so long I want change, seeing I didnt get any with obama or the right kind anyway. I am thinking about the weatherby vangaurd sporter or the savage classic. But the savage comes with a 1-11.5 twist 22" barrell. The weatherby has a 1-9.5 24" barell. what yall think and what do you all think about a winchester m70 featherweight in that caliber. |
Read my review of the M70. I think it would be a great choice. I'm not sure you could ask for more gun in the price range.
I'd really like to step into Savage land though. Just no room in my current gun collection for one. I'll live vicariously through others in the meantime. Tom |
The Winchester is a good choice, the Browning X-Bolt is worth looking at also

Another vote for the Model 70 Featherweight.

1:11.5" seems a little slow for a 7mm. The industry standard is 1:9.5". If you only plan on shooting 120 grain bullets you should have no problems, but if you ever want to shoot heavies you might not get them to stabilize, espacially at 7mm-08 speeds.
Otherwise, both should be good guns, pick the one you like better. Mike |

One of my buddies had a M70 Featherweight 7mm-08 and he swore it was the greatest deer rifle ever made. It got stolen out of his truck during the middle of last season. He replaced it with a Remington CDL in 7mm-08, because none of the local vendors had the M70 featherweight...
I just bought a 7mm-08 as well. Remmy 700 ADL: |
