new gun trouble!!!
i bought a new rossi 243(came with a FM? scope) from gander, about a month ago. ive had nothing but trouble with it since. the first time i shot bought rem core loks could not shoot better than a 10" group. thought maybe something loose in scope mounts. tightened everything. still horrible. following week put a different scope on bought some federals. shot much better groups 2-2.5" at 100yrd but the lever to open action would stick real bad. once i got it open the shell came out just fine. had 4 or 5 core loks left shot them and it opened easily.
what im wondering is if anyone has had any experience with this gun or any suggestions would greatly appreciated. thanx. |
Rossi
The Rossi's tolerances are pretty rough to say the least. I would suggest sanding the breech area to smooth it out a little and stick with the Federals. That's pretty good accuracy for a Rossi
JMO you can e-mail me if you would like for me the walk you through the process. Good luck |
You tear it down, clean, and re-grease it before shooting? Sticky actions on a new gun are usually due to not being cleaned and re-greased. Don't assume it's ready to go out of the box.
Also, it sounds like it was a problem with the scope mounting. 2-2.5 inch groups at 100 yards is not that bad unless you had it viced. Even rested on bags, you're gonna affect the shot more than you think. |
I have a friend that got one in 243 and he put a cheap scope on it and that thang shot like crap just like you he was getting 5to6 in groups. I thank it's the scope but if you look through the scope and move the fore end the cross hairs move all over the place I was thanking of getting one until I seen that and said no way.

Shell sticky could be pressure related, the federals may be hotter then the rems therefor case expansion is such that it sticks until cooled slightly. Can be a result of a burr (s) in the chamber. Did you notice any marks on the spent cases?? This is a sign you may need to touch up or slightly ream to remove.
Other option is try different ammo, you know rem corelokts aren't good, federal x stick..so try a 3rd option? |
I have not had any problems with my Rossi .243. The package deal scopes are crap, but the gun has good accuracy for hunting (1 1/2")
I have heard of sticking cases, I've never had that problem with mine. It's nothing that a little polishing can't cure! |
the cases werent sticking inside the chamber. once i got it open they came out just fine. it doesnt matter anyways it took it back to gander mountain and they allowed me to return it and i bought a marlin xl7 instead shot it a couple of times so far and im much happier with it. so thanx for all the suggestions and help much appreciated.
