300 or 7mm??
I have looked at every gun they make (I think) and have come down to these two calibers... am going after Moose and hopefully Antelope next year. Have always wanted a 300mag. but the 7mm looks real good too!!! Any pros and cons would be helpful!??[:-]

RE: 300 or 7mm??
It' s a kinda pick your poison choice. I own a 7mm and love it. It' s a really flat shooting rifle and can be zereod in beyond belief. I' ve never shot a .300 so I can' t really compare the two, but I can say that if you do get the 7mm you won' t be disappointed.

RE: 300 or 7mm??
Well the 300 Win Mag will shoot heavier bullets better than the 7mm Rem Mag and the 7mm Rem Mag will shoot lighter bullets than the 300 Win Mag. Both are fine cartridges. Flip a coin.

RE: 300 or 7mm??
Given that set of circumstances get the 7mm.
Shoot 140 or 150 for antelope and 175 for the moose. The 7 has less recoil than the 300. I prefer the 300 for elk with 200gr partitions. Everything else I would prefer to use the 7mm (actually I would use a .280 Rem). Either caliber would work great however, if recoil is not a factor, flip a coin. |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Either will work on game from pronghorns to deer,to elk,to moose.I have taken all with the 7mm and 140gr partitions and never had a problem. As of late though I have been using the 300 ultramag for moose and elk.The 7mm mags do have noticeably less recoil than the 300 mags if you are recoil sensitive.

RE: 300 or 7mm??
Either or. Those WSM are really looking nice. I rarely see people that are dissatisfied with them. Most of my friends are exceding the speeds in the manuels 2gr below max load.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
You should take a hard look at the .300 wsm.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Flip a coin on the Cartrige. Get which rifle you like.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
No animal will ever know the difference. However, your shoulder will so I' d go with the 7mm.

RE: 300 or 7mm??
Thanks for the feed back and I see that most prefer the 7mm. Moose is a one time deal (unless I get another chance) and I didn' t think about that... I am avid with deer and recoil does not bother me... I am more concerned about the accuracy and down range power. I know Antelope are alot smaller than moose so a 200-300yrd shot will pack the power from both but I do want to enjoy it with other hunts also. (deer mostly) Guess I' ll hit the balistics charts one more time... go back and see which one says... take me home.. the most.
Thanks again for the help:) |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
I agree with the above gents who said the 7 is a lot easier on the shoulder, yet will get the job done.
If you don' t do a lot of off-season shooting, it won' t matter much, but if you like to keep your shooting skills sharp year-round, buy the 7. If I didn' t already have a 7 Rem Mag, I' d buy a 7 WSM in a heartbeat. |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
You may even want to consider a .270 WSM.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
For moose and elk I would not go smaller than 7mm.Smaller calibers can do the job but they don' t have much power to spare and are better suited to deer sized game.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
300 Mag. Good luck.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
paulw,
What other rifles do you own? I amazed how so many folks are game to essentially built a rack of roughly equivalent mid-bore rifles. For example if you already have a .270, then go for the 300WinMag. If you have no high powers the go for the 7mmMag. It pays to look at the big picture. It only takes three rifles to rule NA from everything from varmits to big and mean, yet most folks with three, or four, or five rifles don' t cover the range. Never Go Undergunned, EKM |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
i don' t own either but i would pick the 7mm rem mag. only because i don' t reload and i find more selections of grains and bullets selections would help me out better.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
I own both and I would pick the.300, We can argue ballistics all day long, but the older I get and the more deer I shoot, and see others shoot has convinced me that there is just something about that .308 caliber bullet as compared to the smaller calibers. Now, 10 years ago I would have never made the statement that I just made. Oh well that' s just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions:D..............

RE: 300 or 7mm??
I was in the same situation not to long ago, wanted a new rifle with mulitple capabilities. Since I Bow, ML and Rifle hunt for game I wanted a gun that would become my all arounder but wouldn' t be called on for Larger game yearly (ie: Moose or Elk), however it would most likely see yearly deer action. Coupled with my poor shooting shoulder and my personal requirement to head to the range and keep in good shooting form, I settled on a the 7 Rem Mag. The recoil is noticably less which poses no problem for me to sit down and plink paper.
But it really is a coin toss, both are equally up to the task. If you really want or desire a 300 Win Mag, then buy it. The only displeasure you' ll have is not buying what you truly want! |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Both will work fine,my pick would be the 7mm...;)
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Either will do the job very well. If I were in your shoes I' d look for the make of rifle you want first then decide between the two for caliber. I was tempted to purchase a 300 WSM but the rifle I wanted (Tikka WH) didn' t come in it. Does come in 7mm RM, and .300 Win. Since I already had all the reloadings for the 7mm I stayed with it.
If you can go shoot both with factory loads. That will let your shoulder do the talking. Either will do fine I think for moose and antelope and even up to a full-grown Elk (with proper bullets and good shot placement). You get a little more energy and frontal energy from the .300 but it might be more gun than you really want to shoot a lot. Best to try both and see which one you like. |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
I have both and they will both do the job . I bought the 7MM Mag or at least my first one back in the 1960' s and at that time they didn' t have any bullets on the market that were worth shooting . The improvement in bullet technology makes either one a good choice in my opinion .
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Both are good, I wouldn' t dream of not having either, however, I hunt with the .300 mag most of the time. I just prefer the .308 cal.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Both are good calibers, and should do fine. I think it also depends on what you already have. If you have something similar to one or the other, that would make the choice a little easier. Personally I have a .280, so getting a 7mag wouldn' t gain me much. I' d go for the .300...it would probably be all the gun you' d ever need...for basically any type of hunting.
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Both are do-all Lower 48 states cartridges and will work fine for most of Canadian and Alaskan hunting, If you leave out grizzly and brown bear which are the same species. Both have a plethora of bullets available for reloaders and factory ammo is available everywhere, if you stick to the winchester and remington " regular" magnums. The 7mm Mag recoils less, sharper kick. The .300 Mag recoils more, fast push. Both good cartridges and have killed everything in Norht America and a lot in Africa and elsewhere.:D
|
RE: 300 or 7mm??
Both are fine cartridges, you might also look as the 7mm S.T.W. but for moose you would want to hand load. These kritters are big, and tho not nearly as hard to kill as simular size African game, you want penitration. This means heavy bullets with good sectional density. In 7mm you want the 175 grain and in .30 I would go for the 180s. Pick a good bullet as all the power in the world does not make up for bullet failure. I would recomend Federal Premuim if you do not hadn load. Up here in Maine, at my shop Remington CorLoss has gained a bad reputation with my customers, if you can not get the Federal I would go with Winchester. As for a cartridge for moose, I would go for the .366 D.G.W. , but of the two you mentioned I would select the .300 Winchester on the merrit of the heaver bullets. You will get more recoil and if this is a problem go with the 7 mag and 175 grain slugs and you will be fine. Your Friend Jud |
RE: 300 or 7mm??
IVE SHOT BOTH AND IOWN A 7MM. I OBVIOUSLY PREFER THE 7MM. THE 300 HAS TOO MUCH RECOIL AND IS OVER KILL ON MOST ANIMALS. THE 7MM IS EQUAL TO 284. THE 7MM IS AN UP AND COMING CARTRIDGE THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE DONT EVEN CONSIDER BECAUSE OF IGNORANCE.[>:]

RE: 300 or 7mm??
Actually any premium 7mm bullet of 140 gr and up work fine on moose and elk.I have killed several moose and elk with the 140gr partition out of both the 7mmrem mag and 7mmstw.Even with a muzzle velocity of 3500fps the 140 gr partitions held together fine and penetrated just as well as heavier partitions.The140gr and up failsafe and barnes x are also fine choices.
