Scope for larger caliber rifles

I picked up a Savage model 111 in .338 caliber. I went to put my scope on but the scope bases are to far apart, when i place the scope into the mounts the scope rings contact the objectives. My scope bases are weaver style and the groove in the bases are in the middle, do I cant reverse my scope bases. Do higher caliber guns need larger scopes. Thanks in advance.

This caliber is often used for dangerous game. A low magnification scope as a 1.5 x 5 would be perfect. You can pick up the game quickly at low power and 5x is more than enough for a longer shot. To corrrect the scope mounting problem you can purchase Leupold reverse mount bases. This will allow the mounting of your scope without purchasing a new scope.

As said you need offset rings for the Savage model 111 . I tried a half dozen different scopes I had and they wouldn't work on that rifle .

An option would be to use a picatinny mount instead of a weaver. Weaver rings will fit a picatinny but not vice versa. There are more slots for adjustability.

Depending on the eye relief of your scope you should be able to use extended rings.

No, larger caliber rifles do not need larger scopes. The problem is that the Savage rifles have veeeeeeery long receivers. If you are going to use standard Leupold or Weaver style bases you need to purchase the extended bases or extension rings.

I had my father machine a new front base for me out of stainless steel...it mounted the same, but I had him cut the keyway behind the rear bolt instead of between the two bolts...works great...

As said, you have to have a different base...
