Which Scope??

I have a friend that needs a scope for his Browning A-Bolt in 7 Mag. He has narrowed it down to 2 choices: 1. Nikon Monarch 4X12X40 for $369.99 or 2. Leupold Vari-X III 3.5X10X40 for $399.99. What do you guys think is the better buy?

RE: Which Scope??

Not to throw another contender into the ring but for $399.99, I would buy a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. It will blow away both those scopes you listed and is a steal at that price.

But if its not an option, go Leupold.

I would take the ziess as I believe it to be a better scope than leupold or nikon.

I WOULD GO FOR THE LEUPOLD. I WOULD WAIT TO SEE IF THE CONQUEST LINE IS GOING TO BE UP TO THE ZEISS STANDARDS.

Leupold,Burris and Grand Slam Weaver. The Nikon I have I had to put on a 223. just would not hold zero on the 7mm that I have, and that was after being sent back to Nikon!

If he desires an adjustable objective the he should buy the Nikon Monarch 4 X 12 x 40. If not, there isn't anything wrong with the Leupold VariXIII. They are both high quality scopes.

I beleive the adjustable objective gives the Nikon the edge. I've hunted both scopes and found the Nikon to perform better in low light conditions. Either scope is a good choice.

RE: Which Scope??

I would not have a scope on a big game rifle that had an adjustable objective. There's absolutely no advantage to it on a big game rifle but it has significant disadvantages, the most important being what happens when the buck of a lifetime appears at 10 yds when the objective is focused on infinity. You won't be able to find the deer unless you refocus the objective, too much trouble and time wasted while that buck walks away. Also, the leupold is a better scope than the nikon.

RE: Which Scope??

Boltman, you can easily see a target and very clear at distances less than ten yards with the above mentioned Nikon scope on the infinity setting (at 4X). For hunting purposes I usually set my scopes on 150 - 200 yards. When I shoot targets I set it a little higher. I don't think I have ever used the infinity setting except this little test. The Nikon Monarch has settings out to 1000 yards. I don't shoot beyond that. The majority of my scopes do have adjustable objectives and I definately prefer them to the fixed objective for long distances. As far as Leupold being better than Nikon, I don't see it. I think the Nikon has a little more clarity and I think the Leupold has legendary durability. Both scopes are excellent and I don't think either choice would be wrong.

No scope mentioned here is much better/worse than the others mentioned. They're all quality...

I like Leupold, but Nikon makes one hell of a scope, too.

The quality of these are superb and personal use is the only way to tell the difference which is slight. You can't go wrong with either, flip a coin.

Both are good scopes . I would lean towards the Leupold.Plus the Leupold's are made in the USA. We all need to keep America working in these depressed times. The job you save might be yours. Ruger Redhawk
