Shipping a Rifle to Myself
Can I just ship a rifle to myself in another state without an FFL?
Thanks Tom |
Olny if it's a muzzeloader or pellet rifle. A few states even prohibit those from being shipped without a FFL.

If it's a modern centerfire rifle it needs to go to an FFL. :s1:

I think that you'd best call the BATF, but I actually think that it would be legal, since no transfer of ownership is occuring. It's just like you can ship a gun to a gunsmith, and then he can ship it directly back to you without using an intermediate FFL dealer, again because there is no actual change of ownership. If you do, though, I'd address it only to yourself, and specify that only the addressee (you) may sign for the package.
But, to be safe, I'd contact the BATFe and find out from the guys who would bust you if I'm wrong ;)! Mike |
Is there a reason that you would have to ship it and not take it with you where ever it is that you are going?
|
With out a ffl being envolved most shippers wont touch it and you cannot ship to your self unless you have a ffl . Even then it must go to the address on the license .
|
take the bolt or action out and send it as parts, two seperate packages.

It is my understanding that it is legal to ship without an FFL, as long as it is for hunting purposes, according to the BATF website(look at question B9):
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b7 The problem may be the policies of the shipping companies. |
Thanks for the info guys.
It looks like I can ship it to myself for hunting purposes. Why do I want it shipped because they lost my rifle for a handful of hours one year at an airport. I got lucky and they dropped it off right at my cousins house, but it could have been much worse. Tom |
